NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 10

December 7th, 2009

This is the second week we’re running with the new format for the NHL Classy Power Rankings. This week saw the notable drop from the Philadelphia Flyers, reflected by the firing of coach John Stevens. Big jumps this week include the Phoenix Coyotes, Minnesota Wild and of course, the new number 1 ranked team! Scroll down below to see who knocked off the San Jose Sharks.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 10

30.  Carolina Hurricanes (6-17-5, 17 pts; last week: 30)
29.  Toronto Maple Leafs (8-13-7, 23 pts; last week: 29)
28.  Anaheim Ducks (10-13-6, 26 pts; last week: 25)
27.  Philadelphia Flyers (13-12-1, 27 pts; last week: 20)
26.  Florida Panthers (11-13-15, 27 pts; last week: 26)

A lowly bottom group, that’s for sure. Though the Leafs have enjoyed better hockey as of late, they are discovering its still not enough. The Philadelphia Flyers, who were ranked in the top 10 earlier this year, hope to get out of their funk with new head coach Peter Laviolette and captain Mike Richards taking a bigger stand in the dressing room. The are too talented to be this mediocre.

25.  Montreal Canadiens (13-14-2, 28 pts; last week: 23)
24.  Edmonton Oilers (12-13-4, 28 pts; last week: 28)
23.  New York Islanders (11-11-7, 29 pts; last week: 22)
22.  New York Rangers (14-14-1, 29 pts; last week: 21)
21.  Minnesota Wild (13-12-3, 29 pts; last week: 27)

The Minnesota Wild make an impressive jump with improved play as of late. It took awhile, but the team has been on fire winning 5 straight and going 13-3-3 in their last 16 games. The Oilers have picked it up a little, too, despite the loss of Ales Hemsky for the rest of the season.  It remains to be seen if it can continue. Lastly, a quick note about the Bruins-Canadiens Centennial game from Friday night; what an outstanding effort from Montreal. The Canadiens played with amazing drive and teamwork, shown perfectly in that 5 on 3 sequence. It was a pleasure to watch, for Habs fans especially. If they played like that every game, they’d be a top contender in the league.

20.  St. Louis Blues (12-10-5, 29 pts; last week: 24)
19.  Tampa Bay Lightning
(11-9-8, 30 pts; last week: 18)
18.  Ottawa Senators (14-10-4, 32 pts; last week: 15)
17.  Columbus Blue Jackets (13-11-5, 31 pts; last week: 19)
16.  Vancouver Canucks (13-11-5, 31 pts; last week: 16

The Senators recent road trip didn’t go as planned losing 3 of 4 games. The St. Louis Blues had impressive wins over the Kings and Sharks which helped push them up to #20 this week. Columbus are still spinning out of control (something tells me Hitchcock’s job security has dipped a bit), while the Canucks stay put at 16.

15.  Detroit Red Wings (14-10-5, 33 pts; last week: 17)
14.  Dallas Stars
(13-8-8, 34 pts; last week: 13)
13.  Atlanta Thrashers (15-8-3, 33 pts; last week: 12)
12.  Nashville Predators (16-11-2, 34 pts; last week: 7)
11.  Buffalo Sabres (16-8-2, 34 pts; last week: 10)

Of this group, I’m very impressed with the Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators. The Thrashers are having a great season and are slowly catching up to the Capitals for the tops in the Southeast. Detroit are starting to put things together too – I wonder if this is a sign of things to come. The Predators are struggling a bit after having a great 7 game run in November, winning only 2 of their last 6 games.

10.  Boston Bruins (15-9-5, 35 pts; last week: 8 )
The big news out of Boston this week was the resigning of center Marc Savard to a long term extension. Savard’s return to the Bruins line up had an immediate impact with a hat trick performance against the Leafs on Saturday. The Boston Bruins have won 3 of their last 4 games and have a few days off before playing the Leafs, Islanders, and Flyers later this week.

9.  Colorado Avalanche (16-9-6, 38 pts; last week: 11)
The Colorado Avalanche continue to struggle and ride the great start they got off to. The Avalanche are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games but have a 5 game home stand coming up after a game on Monday in St. Louis. Rookie Matt Duchene capped off a great week by being named the NHL’s 3rd star of last week, while the Avalanche continue to play without star goalie Craig Anderson.

8.  Los Angeles Kings (17-10-3, 37 pts; last week: 9)
The Los Angeles Kings are still missing Ryan Smyth, and nowhere is that more evident than with star Anze Kopitar. Kopitar has registered 2 points in his last 5 games, but the team has put together 4 wins in their last 6 games. The Kings have a tough schedule this week against the Flames, Sharks, and Coyotes.

7.  Phoenix Coyotes (17-11-1, 35 pts; last week: 14)
The Desert Dogs have been pretty solid lately, going 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. The Phoenix Coyotes have a nice 4 game winning streak going and will look to continue it against the Wild, Kings, and Sharks.

6.  Calgary Flames (18-7-3, 39 pts; last week: 6)
An impressive win from the Calgary Flames on Saturday makes them one of the league’s hottest teams with 5 wins in their last 6 games. Brent Sutter has done a good job installing a solid system for the team to follow and its showing great results. This week, the Flames will face-off against the Kings, Thrashers, and Wild.

5.  Pittsburgh Penguins (20-9-1, 41 pts; last week: 5)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have won 3 of their last 4 games and look every bit as good as they did last year. Sidney Crosby sat out of Saturday’s game with a minor groin injury but is expected back in the line up any day. The Penguins have a busy stretch coming up and it starts this week against the Hurricanes, Canadiens, and Panthers.

4.  Chicago Blackhawks (18-7-3, 39 pts, last week: 2)
The big news surrounding the Chicago Blackhawks is the official resignings of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Duncan Keith to long term extensions. On the ice, the Blackhawks had an impressive overtime victory against the Penguins after a bad 4-1 loss to the Predators. For all the hockey poolies out there, Marian Hossa has 6 points in 6 games and averages around 20 minutes of ice time per game.

3.  New Jersey Devils (19-7-1, 39 pts, last week: 3)
The New Jersey Devils are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and continue to play a strong brand of hockey (especially on the road). On the injury front, the Devils are set to welcome back Johnny Oduya this week – a nice boost for their defense. The Devils play the Sabres on Monday night before starting a 5 game home stand against the Hurricanes, Panthers, and Flyers.

2.  San Jose Sharks (19-7-5, 43 pts; last week: 1)
Finally, the San Jose Sharks aren’t the top team in the Classy Rankings. The main reason is the losses to the Blues and Flames last week. I thought the Sharks lacked the desperation the Flames had on Saturday and I didn’t like the way the Sharks dropped a game to St. Louis in the dying seconds of the game and then in a shootout. The Sharks are still a terrific team, but shades of doubt are starting to creep in, but I have no thing but great things to say about Joe Thornton.

1.  Washington Capitals (18-5-6, 42 pts; last week: 4)
A new number one team in the Classy Power Rankings! And it only took 10 weeks! The biggest reason the Washington Capitals are number one is the fact they’ve been able to win without Alex Ovechkin (injuries, suspension) and Alex Semin (injuries). This week, the Capitals will play the Lightning, Sabres, Hurricanes, and Leafs.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 9

November 30th, 2009

For some teams, as the season goes on so does the losing. Frankly, I don’t see that changing for teams like the Oilers and Hurricanes and that could get boring for us to talk about and you to read about. If not boring, certainly non-classy and I simply cannot have that.

Moving forward, the weekly Classy Power Rankings will place more on the Top 10 NHL teams (teams who consistently win!), while the teams outside of the Top 10 will be featured within one of four groups. Let me know what you think and if you like the new format below.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 9

30.  Carolina Hurricanes (5-16-5, 15 pts; last week: 29)
29.  Toronto Maple Leafs (6-11-7, 19 pts; last week: 30)
28.  Edmonton Oilers (10-13-4, 24 pts; last week: 26)
27.  Minnesota Wild (10-12-3, 23 pts; last week: 27)
26.  Florida Panthers (10-11-4, 24 pts; last week: 23)

The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs chart up this week while the Hurricanes, Wild, and Oilers continue to stumble (especially the Oilers). According to the internet rumor mill, one or all of these teams are looking to make trades to shake things up. That could include the likes of Nathan Horton, Erik Cole, Tomas Kaberle, and others. One thing is for certain, I believe the Hurricanes are about to trade/waive a few roster players in order to start rebuilding their organization and its depth.

25.  Anaheim Ducks (10-11-4, 24 pts; last week: 28)
24.  St. Louis Blues (10-9-5, 25 pts; last week: 25)
23.  Montreal Canadiens (12-12-2; last week: 20)
22.  New York Islanders (10-10-7, 27 pts; last week: 21)
21.  New York Rangers (13-12-1, 27 pts; last week: 22)

None of these teams have been able to play consistently all season yet somehow aren’t too far out of the playoffs – especially the Islanders and Rangers. Needless to say, December’s action will go a long way in determining whether these teams can make a push for the playoffs. The Rangers have really underwhelmed many after starting off so hot and having the NHL’s leading goal scorer Marian Gaborik. Not good news for John Tortorella and company.

20.  Philadelphia Flyers (13-10-1, 27 pts; last week: 16)
19.  Columbus Blue Jackets (12-9-4, 28 pts; last week: 8 )
18. Tampa Bay Lightning (10-6-8, 28 pts; last week: 19)
17.  Detroit Red Wings (12-9-4, 28 pts; last week: 9)
16.  Vancouver Canucks (14-12-0, 28 pts; last week: 17)

Any team in this group (or the one below) could easily find themselves in the Classy Top 10 if they get rolling. While many consider the Philadelphia Flyers a top contending team, they really aren’t playing like it. As far as the Columbus Blue Jackets are concerned, they are on a disastrous slide and its been reported the players are tuning out Ken Hitchcock. The Tampa Bay Lightning are playing decent hockey while the Red Wings and Canucks shouldn’t be taken lightly regardless of any injuries or slumps.

15.  Ottawa Senators (13-7-4, 30 pts; last week: 15)
14.  Phoenix Coyotes (15-11-1, 31 pts; last week: 11)
13.  Dallas Stars (12-7-7, 31 pts; last week: 13)
12.  Atlanta Thrashers (13-7-3, 29 pts; last week: 24)
11.  Colorado Avalanche (14-8-5, 33 pts; last week: 10)

The Atlanta Thrashers may look like the odd-team out in this group, but they are enjoying a solid year with strong contributions from players like Afinogenov, Peverley, Armstrong, Antropov, and others. Oh, and that Kovalchuk guy too. Right now the Thrashers and Senators are the most consistent teams in this group with the Avalanche, Stars, and Coyotes playing mediocre hockey.

10.  Buffalo Sabres (14-7-2, 30 pts; last week: 12)
It’s hard to gauge the Buffalo Sabres this season. Defensively, they are among the best in the league and Ryan Miller is playing the best hockey of his career. Offensively, I’m still not convinced this team can score enough to win in the playoffs. But there’s still 2/3s of the season left for the Sabres to figure that out. The Sabres have a few interesting games coming up against top NHL teams like the Blackhawks, Capitals, and Devils. Before those games, the Sabres will play the Canadiens and Rangers.

9.  Los Angeles Kings (15-10-2, 32 pts; last week: 7)
The Los Angeles Kings are 5-5 in their last 10 games and no one knows it more than Anze Kopitar. Since Ryan Smyth’s injury, the Kings top line has scored one goal in five games. Smyth is still a few weeks weeks away from returning to action, but the Kings should should be able to get rolling this week with games against the Ducks, Senators, and Blues.

8.  Boston Bruins (13-8-5, 31 pts; last week: 18)
The Boston Bruins have quietly turned things around in November, winning five of their last six games. They are one point up on the Senators for the Northeast division lead and Michael Ryder is starting to get hot at a convenient time. Patrice Bergeron doesn’t appear to be injured after blocking a shot with his knee on Saturday. The Bruins will play the Lightning, Canadiens, and Leafs this week.

7.  Nashville Predators (15-9-1, 31 pts; last week: 14)
The Nashville Predators are hot! They’ve won eight of their last 10 games and have a light schedule this week playing the Blackhawks once and the Wild twice. Pekka Rinne is back to the great form he showed last year while the Preds have done a nice job making due with a few key injuries recently.

6.  Calgary Flames (16-6-3, 35 pts; last week: 6)
The Calgary Flames have won three games in a row and sit 3rd in the Western Conference. Jarome Iginla could potentially finish the month of November as the best single month of his career while the Flames are 9-1-3 when playing away from Calgary this season. That’s good news for the Flames as they are on the road this week against the Coyotes, Sharks, and Kings.

5.  Pittsburgh Penguins (18-9-0, 36 pts; last week: 5)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have won four of their last five games including an 8-3 blowout over the New York Rangers on Saturday (Matt Cooke was suspended for two games for a hit in game, too). This week, the Penguins faceoff against the Rangers, Avalanche, and Blackhawks (Crosby/Malkin vs Kane/Toews with Hossa! That should be a great game!).

4.  Washington Capitals (15-5-6, 36 pts; last week: 3)
The Washington Capitals snapped their two game losing streak by posting two straight wins over the Sabres and Canadiens last week. The Capitals are currently first in the Eastern Conference and have a very healthy lead on the Southeast division. Alex Semin is still out of the line up with a wrist injury, but the depth of the Capitals is filling in just fine. This week the Capitals play the Hurricanes, Panthers, and Flyers.

3.  New Jersey Devils (17-6-1, 35 pts; last week: 4)
The New Jersey Devils have won their last three games and really look like a top contending team in the NHL. Patrick Elias’ return has played a big role in the Devils great play. Since Elias’ return, the Devils are 7-2-1 with Elias recording eight points in his last five games. This week, the Devils host the Canucks, Lightning, and Red Wings.

2.  Chicago Blackhawks (16-6-3, 35 pts; last week: 2)
What a week it was for the Chicago Blackhawks. They blow out the Sharks 7-2, Marian Hossa makes an immediate impact and then the team loses two straight to the Ducks and Kings – two teams they can and should beat. Chicago are still the cream of the crop in the Western Conference with San Jose and will look to make an impact this week against the Blue Jackets, Predators, and Penguins.

1.  San Jose Sharks (18-6-4, 40 pts; last week: 1)
As always, the San Jose Sharks are still number one in the Classy Power Rankings thanks to wins over the Oilers and Canucks (and a humbling loss to the Blackhawks) last week. While I don’t believe the Sharks are as deep a team as they were last season, it seems every time Dany Heatley doesn’t score Patrick Marleau does. I’m not suggesting Heatley’s in a funk, but he hasn’t scored a goal in his last three games. The Sharks will play the Blues and Flames after hosting Heatley’s former team, the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night – the week’s hottest game in the NHL.

Stay classy, NHL rankings.

What’s up, Hitchcock?

November 25th, 2009

The NHL scheduling committee doesn’t seem considerate of bloggers looking for daily topics and ideas. We go from 10 games on Monday night to 1 game on Tuesday night to 14 games on Wednesday. Chalk it up to a coincidence or something…

There isn’t much else to talk about, other than the lone Columbus Blue Jackets/Montreal Canadiens game. I could touch on Daniel Briere’s suspension, but who really cares? (Briere received a two game suspension and deserved it.) I could touch on Geroge Laraque’s suspension, but again, who really cares? (Laraque received a five game suspension and definitely deserved it.)

Something that’s surprised me all season has been the terrible defensive play of the Columbus Blue Jackets. It’s not last night’s game or any game in particular, although it was on full display against the Canadiens.

Stay classy, Ken Hitchcock

Stay classy, Ken Hitchcock

If Ken Hitchcock were ever to have a heart attack, it would be induced by terrible defensive play rather than any grease-ified treat… or Martin Havlat’s lunch. Seriously, I cannot believe the Columbus Blue Jacket’s list Ken Hitchcock as their head coach. This is by far the least defensive team he’s ever coached.

It was staggering to see how many 2-on-1 breakdowns the Blue Jackets gave up or how many terrible giveaways were made within 25 feet of their own net. And that’s only from last night’s game.

After 23 games this season, the Columbus Blue Jackets have allowed the most goals against in the NHL (84). That’s even worse than the Carolina Hurricanes or the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs (weird, I know). And to put things into perspective, the Buffalo Sabres have allowed only 48 goals against all season.

Get this: only 8 of 24 Blue Jackets players have positive plus/minus stats (for players who’ve played 15 or more games). Those 8 players don’t include the likes of Rick Nash, R.J. Umberger, Antoine Vermette, Derrick Brassard, Kristian Huselius, Rotislav Klesla, Anton Stralman and more. In fact, the only Blue Jacket with 5 points or more with a positive plus/minus is Jakub Voracek. Other than Voracek, the Blue Jackets top 10 point leaders are all in the negatives. These same players also make up a large portion of ice time for the team.

Another thing to note is the lack of discipline the Blue Jackets show. They are the 7th most penalized team in the league and don’t boast particularly good penalty killing numbers (79.2% kill rate).

Lastly, neither Steve Mason or Mathieu Garon have goals against averages below 3.00. When considering all this, it’s amazing that the Columbus Blue Jackets are actually in a playoff position (they are barely holding onto the 8th and final spot in the Western Conference). However, that won’t last for long if this play continues. It’s time for Hitchcock to reel these defensive woes in before its too late. For some strange reason, it’s not too late yet.

Stay classy, Ken Hitchcock and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 8

November 23rd, 2009

This week’s Class Power Rankings are interesting. We’re at the quarter mark of the NHL season with some teams struggling, some picking up momentum and others flat out dominating. This week, we see slides from the Atlanta Thrashers, New York Rangers and Colorado Avalanche. Big jumps include the red hot Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 8

30.  Toronto Maple Leafs (4-11-6, 14 pts, last week: 29)
It was a pretty rough week for the Toronto Maple Leafs, despite a shootout win against the Capitals on Saturday. A loss against the Ottawa Senators and brutal 3-0 blown lead against the Hurricanes in a “basement battle” won’t sit well with Brian Burke and the rest of the MLSE management team. Simply put, the Maple Leafs don’t have the talent to compete with other teams in 5-on-5 play. This week, the Leafs play the Islanders, Lightning, and Panthers… as always, the results will be interesting.

29.  Carolina Hurricanes (5-12-5, 15 pts, last week: 30)
Believe it or not the Carolina Hurricanes have won 3 or their last 4 games. They’ve grabbed 7 of 8 points and are a point up on the lowly Maple Leafs. It’s worth noting the Hurricanes have won all their games at home and are still winless on the road (0-7-3). This week, the Hurricanes play the Stars and Ducks at home before hitting the road to play the Thrashers and Sabres.

28.  Anaheim Ducks (7-11-3, 17 pts, last week: 28)
The Anaheim Ducks are a bad team.  For as much press as the Toronto Maple Leafs get for their terrible start, the Ducks have just 3 more points and play just as inconsistently. Not only do the Ducks have a bit of a goaltending issue ($6 Million+ is a lot for a backup goalie – Giguere), apparently they are having trouble resigning star Bobby Ryan (2nd overall pick after Sidney Crosby in 2005). At any rate, the Ducks are in the middle of a long home-stand that has them playing the Flames, Hurricanes, and Blackhawks this week.

27.  Minnesota Wild (8-12-2, 18 pts, last week: 25)
The Minnesota Wild will continue to be among the league’s worst teams until they can find a way to play consistent hockey and beat better teams. The Wild beat the Islanders this week but lost to the Coyotes. This week the Wild host the Bruins at home and then have a back to back/home and home series with the slumping Avalanche.

26.  Edmonton Oilers (9-11-3, 21 pts, last week: 24)
I can’t figure out the Edmonton Oilers. I feel like I say that all the time, but it’s true. What is the real identity of this team? At one point, half the team was injured or sick. Most of the Oilers are healthy, yet the team still isn’t producing. There are rumours that the Oilers have interest in the Kostytin brothers and various other stars, but it doesn’t change the fact they won 1 of 4 games last week. Coming up for the Oilers, they’ll play the Coyotes, Kings, and Sharks at home before playing the Canucks in Vancouver.

25.  St. Louis Blues (8-8-4, 20 pts, last week: 26)
For the sake of the St. Louis Blues, I hope they’ve found their game with a current 2 game win streak. As with many of the bottom NHL teams, the Blues cannot play consistent hockey to the best of their abilities. They have 5 more games this month and it starts with games against the Bruins, Stars, Predators, and Red Wings this week.

24.  Atlanta Thrashers (10-7-3, 23 pts, last week: 15)
While concerns over Ilya Kovalchuk’s future with the Atlanta Thrashers continue to dominate most team news, walk-on free agent Maxime Afinogenov is enjoying a solid year (20 points in 20 games). Since his return, Kovalchuk has put up Alex Ovechkin-goal per game averages yet the team hasn’t strung together multiple wins. In fact, the Thrashers are on a 3 game losing streak. They’ll hope to change that this week in games against the Red Wings, Hurricanes, and Flyers.

23.  Florida Panthers (10-9-2, 22 pts, last week: 27)
The Florida Panthers enjoyed last week winning all 3 games against the Rangers, Red Wings and Sabres (all 3 games on the road, too). Although they aren’t in a playoff position, they are a win away from 8th and will look towards moving up in the standings when playing the Penguins, Rangers, Leafs, and Predators this week.

22.  New York Rangers (11-10-1, 23 pts, last week: 11)
It’s very surprising to see the New York Rangers out of a playoff spot in late November considering the start they had this season. I suppose it’s to be expected – they did the same thing last year too. The Rangers are in a major tailspin having gone 3-7 in their last 10 games. Yes, several key injuries haven’t helped (Chris Drury stands out), but that doesn’t change the results the team has had. John Tortorella will try to get his team going this week in important games against the Blue Jackets, Panthers, Lightning, and Penguins.

21.  New York Islanders (8-8-7, 23 pts, last week: 18)
After the first 10 games this season, who thought the New York Islanders would have the same number of points as the Rangers? They aren’t there yet, but I predict the Islanders to be a very exciting team to watch in a year or two. John Tavares and Matt Moulson continue to lead this team with timely scoring and great play, but Marty Biron’s 2-6-2 record is somewhat alarming. Dwayne Roloson has played significantly better so far. This week, the Islanders have games against the Leafs, Flyers, Penguins, and Devils. I’m curious to see how they do against these teams. I’m guessing 2-2.

20.  Montreal Canadiens (11-11-1, 23 pts, last week: 23)
I really like how Carey Price has been playing for the Montreal Canadiens recently. He’s lost 1 of his last 4 starts and made more than 30 saves in each game. That shootout save he made against Carolina was amazing! That aside, injuries continue to be the story in Montreal. Word has it George Laraque will be suspended for 4-6 games for his hit on Nik Kronwall on Saturday night. Tomas Plekanec continues to have a great year for the Canadiens (even if I can’t pronounce his name)… one has to wonder if he’ll be traded or resigned. And of course, looking ahead this week, the Canadiens face off against the Blue Jackets, Penguins, and Capitals.

19.  Tampa Bay Lightning (9-5-7, 25 pts, last week: 20)
The Tampa Bay Lightning just finished up a 4 game road trip that produced a 2-1-1 record… and probably the goal of the year, courtesy of Steve Stamkos. Tampa’s 25 points have them sitting in 7th place in the East (or tied for 5th), something many didn’t think would be the case. I do wonder if they can continue this all season, but the Rick Tocchet appears to have this team playing pretty well. They play the Leafs, Rangers, and Stars this week.

18.   Boston Bruins (10-8-4, 27 pts, last week: 21)
The Boston Bruins got a nice boost last week with the return of Milan Lucic. As well, Tim Thomas has played significantly better as of late. I’m still not sold on their weak defensive play (especially for a Claude Julien coached team), so I look for that to be the next step for the Bruins. They’ve won their last 2 games and have the Blues, Wild, Devils, and Senators coming up this week.

17.  Vancouver Canucks (12-10-0, 24 pts, last week: 16)
The Vancouver Canucks have been very regular in their last 10 games. The return of Daniel Sedin should give a nice boost to the Canucks who are probably at their peak of healthiness this season. Following a 1-0 loss to the Blackhawks last night, the Canucks will look to get back on track against the Kings, Oilers, and Sharks all at home on GM Place ice over the next week.

16.  Philadelphia Flyers (12-7-1, 25 pts, last week: 13)
Not a great start for the Philadelphia Flyers on their Western Conference road trip. They are 1-2, but were blown out badly against Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks. The Flyers continue their road trip this week with games against the Avalanche and Islanders before playing the Sabres and Thrashers. An interesting note from Bill Meltzer last week “Mike Richards has been held without a goal in 14 of his last 17 games. Richards needs to get going in order for the Flyers to get back to their winning ways.

15.  Ottawa Senators (11-6-3, 25 pts, last week: 22)
Despite losing Pascal Leclaire to injury on Saturday night, the Ottawa Senators are riding a 3 game winning streak in recent games against the Sabres, Penguins and Leafs. Daniel Alfredsson is putting together another great season while Milan Michalek is fitting in very well with the Senators (wish I could say the same about Cheechoo). This week, the Senators line up against Capitals, Devils, Blue Jackets, and Bruins.

14.  Nashville Predators (12-8-1, 25 pts, last week: 19)
Did you know the Nashville Predators have won 5 straight games against the Blue Jackets, Sharks, Devils, Canadiens, and Blues? That win streak (and going 8-2 in their last 10 games) have helped turn around a poor start to the season. The Predators are 1 point back of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Other Preds news, the team recently sent down former 1st round pick Colin Wilson to the AHL. This week, the Predators put their win streak on the line against the Red Wings, Avalanche, Blues, and Panthers.

13.  Dallas Stars (10-6-6, 26 pts, last week: 17)
I find the Dallas Stars very up and down as of late. I suppose it won’t help them that young star James Neal was recently suspended for 2 games, but still, the Stars need a good effort against the Hurricanes and Blues (both at home) before playing the Coyotes and Lightning. The Stars currently sit 9th in the Western Conference and tied with the Red Wings for the 8th and final playoff spot at the 1/4 mark of the season (DET wins the tiebreaker though). I’m not sure if this is above or below most people’s expectations or right on par. I expect the Stars to have a strong 2nd half of the season.

12.  Buffalo Sabres (12-6-2, 26 pts, last week: 9)
Following a surprisingly hot start to the season, the Buffalo Sabres have been cold as of late going 4-5-1 in their last 10 including a not-so-good effort against the Senators on Saturday night. Sabres fans are fed up with back-up goaltending efforts from Patty Lalime while Ryan Miller continues to give reason to be the US Olympic team’s number 1 goalie. As always, Tyler Myers seems to get better and better (my rookie of the year at this point of the season). The Sabres look to regroup this week in games against the Capitals, Flyers, and Hurricanes.

11.  Phoenix Coyotes (13-9-1, 27 pts, last week: 14)
The Phoenix Coyotes are still hanging around in playoff contention in the West. I say hanging around because their play recently has slipped… kind of like their financials (oooooh! Buuuurn. I’m kidding…). Right now, the Coyotes have a few injuries and HNIC reported rumours of Peter Muller potentially being traded as a result of not ‘jiving’ with coach Dave Tippett.  The ‘Yotes need to regroup and get back to their winning ways or they could risk sliding out of the playoff picture. Their good start is the only thing keeping them in it at the moment.

10.  Colorado Avalanche (13-7-3, 29 pts, last week: 5)
I know many are saying it and even more are thinking it, “Is the cinderella story over for the Colorado Avalanche?”. Or “Have the Avs come down to earth?”. I don’t have the answers but going 3-6-1 in their last 10 certainly points to a slump. The Avalanche are in tough this week with games against the Flyers and hot Predators, then following up with a home-and-home series with the Wild – 2 games they should win. I expect a better effort from the team and would look for 2-3 wins and no less than 6 points in their 4 games this week.

9.  Detroit Red Wings (11-6-4, 26 pts, last week: 10)
Another costly injury for the Detroit Red Wings came on Saturday with Nik Kronwall going down as a result of a George Laraque hit. Early reports have Kronwall out for 4-8 weeks. Meanwhile, a nice bright spot for the Red Wings is the recently play of Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk who’ve really turned it up a notch. They’ll need to be on this week for tough games against Predators, Thrashers, Flames, and Blues. It’s a big week for the Wings… let’s see how they react.

8.  Columbus Blue Jackets (12-6-3, 27 pts, last week: 12)
The Columbus Blue Jackets have 7 of a possible 8 points in their last 4 games (since being blown out by the Red Wings). Recent news of the Jackets lending top pick Nikita Filatov to the KHL made headlines last week, as well as (what are said to be erroneous) rumours of interest in the Canadiens Scott Gomez.  The Blue Jackets are on the road this week against the Rangers, Canadiens, and Senators before returning home to play the Flames.

7.  Los Angeles Kings (13-9-2, 28 pts, last week: 7)
It’s going to be interesting to see how the Kings play with a fairly serious injury to forward Ryan Smyth. To me, this is the first test for the young Kings this season who’ve lost 2 straight games. Time to regroup for the Kings, who are said to be fatigued as of late. This week the Kings face the Oilers, Canucks, and Blackhawks. The Kings have won 2 of their last 5 games.

6.  Calgary Flames (13-6-2, 28 pts, last week: 4)
While Jarome Iginla has found another gear in the last 2-3 weeks, it seems Dion Phaneuf hasn’t with reports of a screaming match between him and coach Brent Sutter following a loss to the Avalanche. Despite this, the Calgary Flames are playing very well going 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. Miikka Kiprusoff has played a big part in that with stellar play, as well as Iginla. Jay Bouwemeester has been very solid too. The Flames play the Ducks, Coyotes, Red Wings and Blue Jackets this week.

5.  Pittsburgh Penguins (15-8-0, 30 pts, last week: 6)
Is it fair to say the Pittsburgh Penguins are struggling? Key injuries have been well documents (especially on Defense), however, Evgeni Malkin and Max Talbot have since returned to the line up. Sidney Crosby has struggled a bit lately while Marc-Andre Fleury looks a bit tired (as noted in the Senators game on Thursday). A busy week lies ahead for the Penguins as they play the Panthers, Canadiens, Islanders, and Rangers… frankly, all games they can and should win.

4.  New Jersey Devils (14-6-1, 29 pts, last week: 2)
The New Jersey Devils have slowed down a bit from their crazy hot streak dropping their last 3 games. Recently, the Devils lost forward Dainius Zubrus 4-6 weeks due to injury. The Devils have a few days off before playing the Senators, Bruins, and Islanders later this week. Will this finally be the week Marty Brodeur gets the historic shutout?

3.  Washington Capitals (13-5-5, 31 pts, last week: 3)
The Washington Capitals were on a bit of a roll with Alex Ovechkin out of the line up. It’ll be interesting to see how they play with his return, especially after a disappointing loss to the Leafs on Saturday. Some rumours have spiked up about the resignings of Nick Backstrom and Alex Semin lately. Just a bold prediction here, I think we’re going to see Nick Backstrom explode at the Olympics in a really dominant way. Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom and Co. play the Senators, Sabres, and Canadiens this week.

2.  Chicago Blackhawks (15-5-2, 32 pts, last week: 8 )
The only team hotter than the Predators right now are the Chicago Blackhawks. They’ve reeled off 7 straight wins and are showing no signs of slowing down. What’s even scarier for this team is Jonathan Toews – who is playing as well as he ever has – could be united with Marian Hossa very soon. Word has it Hossa is on the Blackhawks road trip and expects to play in the next week or so. Off ice news from the Hawks continues to swirl with the anticipated resignings of Toews, Patrick Kane, and Duncan Keith to be announced any day now.

1.  San Jose Sharks (16-5-4, 36 pts, last week: 1)
Dany Heatley!! Yes, he’s scored 18 goals this season and leads the NHL. The San Jose Sharks still haven’t lost at home and have only lost 1 game in their last 10. This all sounds very regular for the NHL’s top team. The combination of Thornton and Heatley has been just as good as everyone thought. I really like how Dan Boyle has been playing this season, too. The Sharks play the Oilers and Blackhawks this week.

Stay classy, NHL rankings.

Nikita Filatov is heading to the KHL for a year

November 17th, 2009

I’ve always liked Nikita Filatov. I was very excited for the Columbus Blue Jackets when they selected him 5th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry draft. I still am excited. I believe Filatov will make a huge impact in the NHL, especially on a skilled team like the Columbus Blue Jackets. Anyone familiar with Filatov knows how skilled and dangerous the Russian-born left winger can be.

Perhaps expectations were too high for the kid – Filatov is 19 years old and weighs 180 LBS soaking wet. In 13 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets this season, Filatov struggled scoring only 2 goals while playing approximately 11 minutes per game.

Earlier today (around 1pm), news of Filatov being loaned to the KHL for one year broke courtesy of Aaron Portzline from The Columbus Dispatch (via Twitter). I found this confusing.

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock appeared on Sportsnet’s HockeyCentral radio show around noon today and talked about Filatov having difficulty adjusting to life in North America. Hitchcock went on to say Filatov had good relationships within the Blue Jackets organization and was making headway adapting to life in the United States.

I wonder if there’s anything else going on here? According to Portzline, Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson was quoted saying “Everybody had high expectations. I still have high expectations. It’s not happening as soon as we hoped, but that’s OK. He’s 19.” (via Portzline’s Twitter account).

“Everybody had high expectations. I still have high expectations. It’s not happening as soon as we hoped, but that’s OK. He’s 19.”
Scott Howson, Columbus Blue Jackets GM

Everything sounds rosey and Filatov himself is saying all the right things, “I’m not mad at anybody here. Nothing has changed. My dream is still to play in the NHL.” But I still don’t think this makes complete sense. How does sending Nikita back to Russia help him adapt to North America?

Sure, a year in the KHL could serve Filatov’s hockey development well. I don’t see how this is going to help Filatov’s off-ice struggles. He might come back to Columbus a stronger hockey player next year (and hopefully with a bit of added weight!), but as a person fitting into an organization, well, I’m not so sure…

Stay classy, Nikita Filatov.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 7

November 16th, 2009

As with any rankings, there’s ups and downs. This week, the Atlanta Thrashers, Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings enjoy strong reviews while the Penguins and Avalanche drop in rankings as a result of minor slumps.

Without further delay, here are week 7′s rankings…

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 7

30.  Carolina Hurricanes (3-12-4, 10 pts, last week: 30)
The Carolina Hurricanes 14 game losing streak is over after beating the Wild on Sunday afternoon. Finally. But seriously, who are we kidding? The Hurricanes are essentially out of the playoff race… unless they win approximately 43 of their remaining 63 games. The bigger problems for the Hurricanes is their roster and coaching. Can they fire Paul Maurice (again) after just resigning him to a 3 year contract in the summer? They are still paying for Peter Laviolette’s contract. Who do they think they are, the Ottawa Senators??? On top of that, the Hurricanes don’t hold many players that are of interest to other NHL clubs. The ‘Canes are close against the salary cap and I don’t see what kind of moves the Hurricanes can make any time soon.

29.  Toronto Maple Leafs (3-10-5, 11 pts, last week: 28)
Not a good week for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They followed up a surprising 5-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings two weekends ago with three straight losses to the Wild, Blackhawks and Flames. It’s worth noting scapegoat Vesa Toskala played very well in the loss to the Blackhawks and Phil Kessel has met every expectation in his six games with the Leafs. Other than that, the Leafs need to start every game with the same intensity they end them with. Ron Wilson has to find a way to transpose his 2nd intermission speech into his pre-game speech. This week the Leafs face off against the Senators, Hurricanes and Capitals.

28.  Anaheim Ducks (6-9-3, 15 pts, last week: 23)
Speaking of three game losing streaks, the Ducks and Leafs must be drinking the same kool-aid. The Ducks dropped games to the Devils, Blue Jackets and Red Wings last week. This week, the Ducks play the Penguins on Monday night (Ryan Whitney’s return to Pittsburgh) and return to Anaheim for one of two season long seven game home stands. The biggest concern for Anaheim at the moment has to be goaltending. Neither Jonas Hiller or J.S. Giguere is playing very well and Hiller’s most recent performance in Detroit was alarming. Even more troubling, the Ducks need to make a decision between the two goalies sooner than later. Beyond the Penguins, the Ducks host the Lightning and Sharks this week.

27.  Florida Panthers (7-9-1, 15 pts, last week: 29)
The Florida Panthers won both games last week in a light schedule against the Bruins and Islanders. Hopefully for Panthers fans the team got their rest as they play the Kings, Sabres, Red Wings and Rangers this week. On top of rest, Panthers fans are hoping players like Michael Frolik, Nathan Horton and everyone except Steven Reinprecht regain their scoring touch.

26.  St. Louis Blues (6-8-4, 16 pts, last week: 27)
I don’t get it, what’s up with the St. Louis Blues this season? They hold the second least amount of wins (six) this season behind the Leafs and Hurricanes (three each). The Blues also rank second last in the NHL for goals scored. The following forwards have scored two goals or less: David Backes, TJ Oshie, Patrik Berglund and Brad Winchester. Simply put, the Blues need more goals. Chris Mason has played some great hockey lately despite this. The Blues look to turn around their two game losing streak this week against the Coyotes and Islanders as part of six straight games at home.

25.  Minnesota Wild (7-11-2, 16 pts, last week: 25)
The Minnesota Wild picked up five of eight points last week, going 1-1-2 against the Hurricanes, Capitals, Lightning and Leafs. Players like Mikko Koivu, Eric Belanger and Andrew Brunette are scoring for the Wild, but Martin Havlat isn’t. Havlat’s two goals and six assists ranks 6th on the team, his -13 is a team worst and his shooting percentage (4.4%) is well below his career average. If the Wild want to beat the Coyotes and Islanders this week, Havlat needs to step it up.  Especially since the Wild lost to the Hurricanes on Sunday. I had to mention that.

24.  Edmonton Oilers (8-10-2, 18 pts, last week: 24)
Do we really know who the Edmonton Oilers are this NHL season? After a strong start (6-3-1), the flu hit the Oilers and they haven’t recovered winning only two of their last 10 games. The Oilers look to finish their four game road trip on a positive note against the Blue Jackets on Monday after losing the first three games to the Senators, Sabres and Thrashers. Looking past Monday’s game against Columbus, the Oilers will start five straight home games against the Avalanche and Blackhawks.  The Oilers are 2-7-1 at home this season.

23.  Montreal Canadiens (9-11-0, 18 pts, last week: 20)
A great quote from HabsInside/Out.com about the 2009-2010 Montreal Canadiens,  ”Before the season began, everyone agreed the team would need that many games to gel after all the changes in the offseason. Well, after 20 games, there are more questions than answers.” I couldn’t agree more. The good news for the Canadiens is that they are only three points out of a playoff spot and the Northeast division is very weak (Leafs and Senators especially). The Habs will play the Hurricanes, Capitals and Red Wings this week and look to improve on winning one of their last four games.

22.  Ottawa Senators (8-6-3, 19 pts, last week: 21)
Another rough week for the Ottawa Senators. Particularly goalie Pascal Leclaire who let in goals against the Oilers and Flyers that were Martin Gerber-esque. The Senators squeaked by the Oilers, then lost badly to Ray Emery and his Flyers before dropping another shootout game against the Rangers on Saturday. The Senators defense simply doesn’t look good enough right now and might cause Bryan Murray to look into trading partners. The Senators are on a five game home stand and will host the Leafs, Penguins and Sabres this week.

21.  Boston Bruins (8-7-4, 20 pts, last week: 19)
The Boston Bruins have not been consistent this season. Tim Thomas is starting to get back to form in the last week or two, but I still want to see more from Michael Ryder, David Krejci and Blake Wheeler. The Boston Bruins have been shutout four times in November and need these guys to step up in the absence of Milan Lucic and Marc Savard. The Bruins play the Islanders, Thrashers and Sabres this week.

20.  Tampa Bay Lightning (7-4-6, 20 pts, last week: 17)
The Tampa Bay Lightning are quietly putting things together this season in the NHL. The Lightning are 5-1-4 in their last 10 games, are undefeated at home (5-0-4) and only one point back of 8th in the Eastern Conference. The one thing that does concern me about the Lightning is their secondary scoring. Steven Stamkos has 13 goals and Ryan Malone has  12 goals… but after that, the third highest Lightning goal scorers are Alex Tanguay and Marty St. Louis with three goals each. On deck for the Tampa Bay Lightning this season are Coyotes, Ducks and Hurricanes.

19.  Nashville Predators (9-8-1, 19 pts, last week: 22)
Despite two straight wins, the Nashville Predators are still struggling to score goals and have the leagues lowest goals for total. There’s some grumblings the Predators are interested in Fabien Brunnstrom who may or may not be available from the Stars. The Predators have started a five game home stand that will see them play the Sharks, Devils, Blue Jackets and Red Wings.

18.  New York Islanders (7-6-7, 21 pts, last week: 16)
I have to admit I’m rooting for the New York Islanders. Finally they aren’t dead last in the NHL and things can only get better for a team with stars like John Tavares… and Matt Moulson (I know, still feels weird to say). If the NHL season ended today, the New York Islanders would make the playoffs, largely because of a much improved 6-2-2 record over their last 10 games. The Islanders are in the middle of a seven game road trip that will have them play the Bruins, Wild and Blues this week.

17.  Dallas Stars (8-5-6, 22 pts, last week: 12)
The Dallas Stars have dropped off a bit lately and find themselves 9th in the Western Conference thanks to a 4-3-3 record in their last 10 games. For every win the Stars generate, they seem to lose the next game after that. They are having trouble stringing together consecutive wins. The Stars will face off against against the Red Wings, Blue Jackets and Devils this week.

16.  Vancouver Canucks (11-10-0, 22 pts, last week: 13)
The Vancouver Canucks are plugging away playing .500 hockey. Right now, they don’t appear to be playing consistent hockey. Some games are big wins (Saturday night against the Avalanche) and some are bad losses (last week against the Blues). The Canucks have a few days off this week and will only play one game… a rematch against the Avalanche.

15.  Atlanta Thrashers (10-6-1, 21 pts, last week: 26)
Ilya Kovalchuk’s return has made a big difference for the Atlanta Thrashers who’ve put together a nice four game winning streak. Rich Peverley continues to be another great story for the Thrashers who has recorded – get this – 56 points in 55 games since being claimed off waivers from the Nashville Predators last year. The Thrashers are sitting in 7th place in the Eastern Conference and will look to move up this week when playing the Bruins and Penguins.

14.  Phoenix Coyotes (11-8-0, 22 pts, last week: 11)
The Phoenix Coyotes are holding on to that final playoff spot in the Western Conference having played sub .500 hockey in November. I look for the Coyotes to have a nice turn around playing the likes of the Lightning, Wild and Blues this week.

13.  Philadelphia Flyers (10-5-1, 21 pts, last week: 10)
Part of the reason for the Philadelphia Flyers slip in the Classy Power Rankings is a result of weird scheduling with only two games played last week. And one shouldn’t count as a game considering how badly the Senators played against Ray Emery and the Flyers. The schedule evens out (sort of) this week with four tough games against Devils, Kings, Sharks and Coyotes.

12.  Columbus Blue Jackets (10-6-2, 22 pts, last week: 8 )
I’m still a bit frustrated with the Columbus Blue Jackets. That 9-1 loss to the Red Wings isn’t sitting right and I still don’t understand why Ken Hitchcock insisted on having Steve Mason play through the full game (and lit up badly) in front of Mike Babcock and Steve Yzerman. I feel the Blue Jackets are playing a bit too loose for a Hitchcock coached team. That said, Rick Nash is still among the league leaders in points and the team is well positioned to make the playoffs with three wins in their last four games. The Blue Jackets are up against the Oilers, Stars and Predators this week.

11.  New York Rangers (11-8-1, 23 pts, last week: 9)
The New York Rangers are playing .500 hockey in November – partly due to inconsistent play and significant injuries. Henrik Lundqvist continues to play well for the Rangers including a stellar performance in a shootout win over the Senators on Saturday.  The Rangers have a light week at home hosting the Capitals and Panthers before heading out on the road next week.

10.  Detroit Red Wings (10-5-3, 23 pts, last week: 18)
The Detroit Red Wings are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games having won three straight against the Ducks, Canucks and Blue Jackets. A big reason for the Red Wings big wins last week resides with star Henrik Zetterberg who’s scored nine points over the three games including five against the Ducks on Saturday night. The Red Wings play the Stars, Panthers and Canadiens this week.

9.  Buffalo Sabres (12-4-1, 25 pts, last week: 14)
Winners of three straight games, the Buffalo Sabres have allowed the least amount of goals against in the entire NHL. To be exact, only 37 goals in 17 games. In their last 10 games, the Sabres are 7-3-0 and have beaten strong teams like the Flyers and Flames in the process. Ryan Miller continues to play unbelievably well and Tyler Myers is showing no signs of slowing down either. Up next for the Sabres are the Panthers, Bruins and Senators.

8.  Chicago Blackhawks (12-5-2, 26 pts, last week: 15)
The Chicago Blackhawks have won four straight games and have captain Jonathan Toews back in the line up (who’s been great since returning!). Unfortunately during Friday night’s win over the leafs, Kris Versteeg was injured off a hit from Jeff Finger. That said, the Hawks are on a roll and will look to continue their strong play this week as they start a six game road trip against the Flames, Oilers and Canucks.

7.  Los Angeles Kings (12-7-2, 26 pts, last week: 7)
I was disappointed with the Los Angeles Kings road trip this past week. Bad losses to the Blackhawks (bad third period) and Thrashers (bad game; 7-0 loss) and wins over the Hurricanes and Lightning isn’t good enough for this young Kings team.  The Kings schedule gets tougher this week as they’ll finish their road trip against the Panthers, then return home to host the Flyers and Flames.

6.  Pittsburgh Penguins (13-7-0, 26 pts, last week: 3)
The Pittsburgh Penguins are glad star Evgeni Malkin is back in the line up. The Penguins recent road trip didn’t go so well – they’ve lost four of their last five games and Sidney Crosby went five games without registering a point. Right now, the following Penguins have day-to-day injuries: Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik and Tyler Kennedy. On the Penguins schedule this week is the Ducks, Senators and Thrashers.

5.  Colorado Avalanche (12-5-3, 27 pts, last week: 2)
This young Colorado Avalanche team is going through some adversity and it will be interesting to see how the rookies deal with it. By adversity I mean not winning every game. The Avalanche have cooled off a bit lately going 5-4-1 in their last 10 games with a schedule that includes games against the Flames, Oilers and Canucks this week.

4.  Calgary Flames (12-4-2, 26 pts, last week: 6)
The Calgary Flames have won five of their last six games and have kept their goals against to two or less in each of those games. Jarome Iginla is officially back after a slow start and Rene Bourque continues his strong play. It should be noted 13 of Calgary’s 19 games have been played at home and the Flames have won 10 of them. Up this week for the Flames is the Avalanche, Blackhawks and Kings.

3.  Washington Capitals (12-5-3, 27 pts, last week: 5)
Losing Alex Ovechkin for six games has been a good thing for the Washington Capitals. In those six games, the Capitals have scored 23 goals and won four. The return of Tomas Fleischmann has been a big lift to the Caps secondary scoring (seven goals in 10 games). Although Ovechkin was a game time decision on Saturday night (he didn’t play), it looks like he’ll return to the line up this week when the Capitals play the Rangers, Canadiens and Leafs.

2.  New Jersey Devils (14-4-0, 28 pts, last week: 4)
The New Jersey Devils are the toast of the Eastern Conference along with the Capitals. The Devils are on an eight game winning streak, are still undefeated on the road (9-0-0) and are the NHL’s hottest team going 9-1-0 in their last 10 games. Potential Devils victims this week include the Flyers, Predators and Stars… all of which are Devils road games.

1.  San Jose Sharks (14-3-5, 32 pts, last week: 1)
Despite losing Sunday night’s game to the Blackhawks with a 3-1 lead, the San Jose Sharks have recorded points in all but one game in November. To add to that, the Sharks are 7-0-3 in their last 10 games and 6-0-2 at home this season. The Sharks are the strongest team in the NHL and have been the most consistent so far this season – as expected. Up this week for the Sharks are the Predators, Flyers and Ducks.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – week 6

November 9th, 2009

Some positive movements this week in the Classy Power Rankings for teams like the Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames, while a few other teams like the Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres took nose dives.

Without further delay, here are your rankings after week 6 of the NHL!

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 6

30.  Carolina Hurricanes (2-11-3, 7 pts, last week: 30)
Things have gone from bad to worse for the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s bad enough the club has lost 12 straight games and Eric Staal has an upper body injury. Then on Saturday night, Cam Ward suffered a cut to his left leg and is reportedly out for 3-4 weeks. Recently GM Jim Rutherford took blame for the Hurricanes struggles suggesting a few players might be traded. The Hurricanes next three games are at home against the Kings, Islanders and Wild. That’s probably a good thing considering the team is still winless on the road (0-7-2).

29.  Florida Panthers (5-9-1, 11 pts, last week: 30)
Right now, I’m not liking the play of the Florida Panthers. They won one of their three games last week (against the Hurricanes…) and dropped both divisional games against the Capitals in a home-and-home battle. Losses of 4-1 and 7-4 shouldn’t sit well with the Panthers considering Alex Ovechkin wasn’t in the lineup for either game.

28.  Toronto Maple Leafs (3-7-5, 11 pts, last week: 29)
Prepare the parade, the Toronto Maple Leafs are well on their way to moving up the weekly Classy Rankings. Jonas Gustavsson has provided the Leafs with stable goaltending while the impact of Phil Kessel has been immediate. Believe it or not, the Leafs are actually 3-0-4 in their last seven games including winning back-to-back games against the Hurricanes and Red Wings on Friday and Saturday. The Leafs will look to continue their better play when meeting the Wild, Blackhawks and Flames this week.

27.  St. Louis Blues (5-6-4, 14 pts, last week: 25)
The good news is the St. Louis Blues have picked up points in their last three games. The bad news is the Blues have lost each of those games in overtime or shootout. The Blues had a 2-0 lead against the Thrashers on Sunday night with about 8 minutes left in the game. With their next six games on home ice, the Blues need to improve on their current 2-5-1 home record. This marks the longest home-stand of the Blues this season and it starts this week with games against the Canucks, Predators and Sharks.

26.  Atlanta Thrashers (7-6-1, 15 pts, last week: 22)
The Atlanta Thrashers won two and lost two this week including an impressive 3-2 shootout win (after trailing 2-0 in the 3rd) against the Blues. The Thrashers will play the Rangers and then host the Kings and Oilers later in the week. Scoring firstl in each of these games is critical for the Thrashers who win every game they score first in. Still no real time-table for Ilya Kovalchuk’s return – he’s expected back in a minimum of 2-3 weeks.

25.  Minnesota Wild (6-10-0, 12 pts, last week: 26)
The Minnesota Wild are still having some issues with consistency, losing to the Canucks and then beating the Stars the following game. The Wild sport a 1-8-0 record on the road and that’s bad news considering their next four games are away against the Leafs, Lightning, Capitals and Hurricanes. Martin Havlat has just one goal and needs to get going for this team to be at all successful.

24.  Edmonton Oilers (8-8-1, 17 pts, last week: 13)
The Edmonton Oilers are looking to move past the sick month of October, literally. After dropping games to the Islanders and Rangers, the Oilers began their five game road trip with an impressive 5-3 win against the Avalanche. The Oilers will play the Senators, Sabres, Thrashers and Blue Jackets before returning to Edmonton. A great opportunity to make up some points on division rivals.

23.  Anaheim Ducks (6-7-2, 14 pts, last week: 27)
The Anaheim Ducks are riding a two game win streak as a result of beating the Predators and Coyotes last week. The Ducks will start a tough four game road trip against the Devils, Blue Jackets, Red Wings and Penguins. Despite only having one goal, Ryan Getzlaf has a team high 14 assists while Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne lead the way with 11 and 9 goals respectively. Congrats to Selanne for passing Habs great Jean Beliveau as the 38th all time NHL scorer.

22.  Nashville Predators (7-7-1, 15 pts, last week: 18)
With news over the weekend that Michael Nylander had been placed on waivers by the Washington Capitals, rumors suggest the Predators could be interested in former sniper. Maybe he can help the Preds score more goals – as it stands, the Predators have scored an NHL low of 31 goals in 15 games this season (yes, even Carolina has scored more). Eight of those goals come from defensemen and Shea Weber leads the team with five! With that said, the Predators have won four of their last five and look to continue their strong play this week against the Sharks, Blues and Canadiens.

21.  Ottawa Senators (7-5-2, 16 pts, last week: 17)
Penalties, penalties, penalties. The Ottawa Senators are the most penalized team in the NHL, averaging 20.1 minutes of penalties per game. That’s 1/3 of a game. The Senators enjoyed the return of Jason Spezza while Anton Volchenkov is still a week or two out. There’s a cause for concern in Ottawa with the Senators having difficulty holding leads after dropping a 2-0 lead to the Devils on Saturday. The Senators look to get back on track in games against the Oilers, Flyers and Rangers this week.

20.  Montreal Canadiens (8-9-0, 16 pts, last week: 16)
Despite turning in one of his better performances in recent memory (against Boston), Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price was the subject of controversy from the twitter account of Jaroslav Halak’s agent, Allan Walsh on Saturday. Walsh twittered “Interesting stat of the night….Price is 10W, 32L in last 42 stars. Hmm.” Of course, this set off a fire storm (Kelly Hrudey went off during HNIC) all weekend. Let’s hope this circus dies down and one of Halak or Price plays well when the Canadiens meet up with the Flames, Coyotes and Predators this week.

19. Boston Bruins (7-7-2, 16 pts, last week: 22)
The Boston Bruins have one won of their last four games, have scored three goals in this rut and wouldn’t make the playoffs if the season ended today. Sloppy play and inconvenient injuries have taken their toll on the club. It won’t get much easier for the Bruins either, playing the Penguins twice this week with a game with the Panthers in between.

18.  Detroit Red Wings (7-5-3, 17 pts, last week: 20)
After going 4-0-1 in their last five games, the Detroit Red Wings laid an egg on Saturday against the Leafs in a 5-1 loss. The Red Wings have some bad injury problems – Johan Franzen, Jason Williams, Valterri Filpulla are all long term injuries and the club is finding it difficult to get timely scoring from Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Chris Osgood needs to be better in goal, as well. The Red Wings have a difficult schedule coming up against the Blue Jackets, Canucks and Stars.

17. Tampa Bay Lightning (6-4-5, 17 pts, last week: 24)
Steve Stamkos continues to impress while Vincent Lecavalier finally scored his first goal of the year last week for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Scary moment for blue chip defenseman Victor Hedman who got knocked into next week by Chris Neil in a game in Ottawa. His status is listed as day-to-day, but is expected in the line up later this week when the Lightning play the Wild and Kings.

16.  New York Islanders (6-6-5, 17 pts, last week: 21)
The New York Islanders have had a nice turnaround as of late, having pulled themselves up to a .500 record thanks to efforts from Matt Moulson, Jeff Tambellini and others. Though they were shutout at the hands of the Sabres (returning the favor from two weeks ago), the Islanders bounced back for a big win against the Thrashers on Saturday night. Islanders fans had an uneasy moment in the Thrashers game when number one pick John Tavares had the wind knocked out of him. Thankfully he is fine. Rumors of Rick DiPetro getting closer to recovery and rejoining the team are beginning to surface and word is Marty Biron will be the goalie on the move (a prearranged deal, according to Scott Morrison at CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada). Teams that may be interested include the Blackhawks, Sabres and Red Wings.

15.  Chicago Blackhawks (8-5-2, 18 pts, last week: 8 )
If they didn’t know before, the Chicago Blackhawks should be painfully aware how much they miss a solid goaltender. This team will continue to post regular records without a real number one goalie (see Biron and the Islanders above). That said, the loss of Jonathan Toews cannot be overlooked. The Hawks lost two tough games this week against the Coyotes and Avalanche – two teams that should act as healthy measuring stick. Coming up, the Hawks will do battle against the Kings, Avalanche, Leafs and Sharks this week, with each of these games at home. The Hawks expect both Toews and Ben Eager to return against the Kings while David Bolland is still day-to-day.

14.  Buffalo Sabres (9-4-1, 19 pts, last week: 9)
After starting the season 8-1-1, the Buffalo Sabres have since gone 1-3, allowing 17 goals in those four games. The Sabres will look to get back on track this week when they meet the Oilers, Flames and Flyers.

13.  Vancouver Canucks (10-8-0, last week: 15)
The Vancouver Canucks had a three game win streak snapped with a tough loss to the Stars on Friday night. So far, the Canucks are managing without Roberto Luongo as Andrew Raycroft has stepped in and done a wonderful job, with a record of 4-1-1 and a save percentage of .936. The Canucks are at the beginning of a four game road trip that see’s them play against Blues and Red Wings before wrapping up in Denver versus the Avalanche.

12.  Dallas Stars (7-4-6, 20 pts, last week: 11)
The Dallas Stars have won just one of their last five games, despite picking up points in three of those outings. I find this team inconsistent and capable of more – the overtime loss last week against the Calgary Flames serves as a great example. The Stars haven’t won a game this season when trailing after the first period and simply need to get better in special teams. The Stars rank 22nd in the NHL on the penalty kill and 18th in the league while enjoying powerplays. The Stars will face off against the Sharks and Coyotes this week.

11.  Phoenix Coyotes (10-7-0, 20 pts, last week: 6)
The Phoenix Coyotes have finally been sold to the NHL! Finally – there, I said it. After jumping out to a 6-2 record, the Coyotes stumbled going 4-5 in their next nine games with recent losses to the Kings, Avalanche and Ducks. Up next for the Coyotes are the Canadiens and Stars.

10.  Philadelphia Flyers (9-4-1, 20 pts, last week: 18)
The Philadelphia Flyers are quietly enjoying a four game win streak that’s seen wins over Blues, Sabres, Lightning and Hurricanes. Impressively, the Flyers have allowed just six goals against during the four wins. Ray Emery is having a really solid season (9-3-1 record, 2.27 GAA and .922 save percentage) while Daniel Brierre and Simon Gagne continue to prove they cannot stay healthy. On deck for the Flyers this week: the Senators and Sabres.

9.  New York Rangers (10-7-1, 21 pts, last week: 5)
The New York Rangers swing through Western Canada didn’t go so well, losing two of three to the Canucks and Flames. Add to that, the indefinite loss of Brandon Dubinsky (wrist) and Chris Drury (concussion), as well as Henrik Lundqvist being day-to-day with mild soreness (believed to be groin) and you have a recipe for potential disaster. The Rangers get a few days off and return to action against the Thrashers and Senators.

8.  Columbus Blue Jackets (9-5-2, 20 pts, last week: 12)
The Columbus Blue Jackets have won their last two games against the Thrashers and Hurricanes this week but dropped an important one to the Sharks in a shootout. The Jackets host the Red Wings, Ducks and Oilers in the next week. Rick Nash remains third in the NHL in points scored, just five back of the leader (Kopitar, Kings).

7.  Los Angeles Kings (10-5-2, 22 pts, last week: 7)
After going 2-1 this week, the Los Angeles Kings gear up for a five game road trip playing the Blackhawks, Hurricanes, Thrashers, Lightning and Panthers. This is an important swing for the Kings who should win 3-4 of these games and come back with 8 points or more. Look for the NHL’s point leader Anze Kopitar to have a big week and pick him up in your fantasy pools if you don’t already have him!

6.  Calgary Flames (10-4-1, 21 pts, last week: 14)
After a week of bag-skates from coach Brent Sutter and H1N1 controversy, the Calgary Flames have put together three straight victories and have won four of their last five. Jarome Iginla has regained his scoring hand at the perfect time, helping add to Rene Bourque’s solid contributions. The Flames get set to play the Canadiens, Sabres and Leafs on the road this week.

5.  Washington Capitals (10-3-4, 24 pts, last week: 4)
Despite losing Alex Ovechkin for what’s being rumored as 4-5 weeks, the Washington Capitals are managing OK with two solid wins over the Panthers. On Saturday, the Capitals placed Michael Nylander on waivers and have recently been mentioned as a potential destination for the once-a-year comeback story we’ve all grown tired of hearing: Peter Forsberg. The Caps will need to continue strong play and balanced scoring this week against the Islanders, Wild and Devils.

4.  New Jersey Devils (11-4-0, 22 pts, last week: 10)
The New Jersey Devils are still undefeated on the road –  perfect 8-0 this year, recently beating the Senators (other teams). As a whole, the Devils are riding a five game win streak and are playing very well. Patrik Elias has just returned from injury and the Devils are able to slowly ease him back into play. The Devils play the Ducks, Penguins and Capitals this week.

3.  Pittsburgh Penguins (12-5-0, 24 pts, last week: 1)
A bit of a rough week for the Pittsburgh Penguins – they’ve lost two games straight on the road (against the Sharks and Kings) and Sidney Crosby sat out of practice Sunday with some general soreness. With a schedule against the Bruins and Devils this week, Pittsburgh looks to turn this small losing streak around.

2.  Colorado Avalanche (12-4-2, 26 pts, last week: 2)
Are the Colorado Avalanche cooling off? After ripping up the month of October, the Avs have started November a little slow, going 2-2 and losing to the Oilers on Sunday. The Avalanche have two big games against the Blackhawks and Canucks this week before setting out on a three game road trip to Western Canada the week after.

1.  San Jose Sharks (12-4-2, 26 pts, last week: 3)
It’s not much of a surprise to anyone that the San Jose Sharks are off to another great start. Perhaps one of the Sharks nicer surprises is the play of Patrick Marleau who already has 22 points in 18 games, leading all Shark players. The Sharks have won seven of their last 8 games, including a 5-0 win over the Stanley Cup Champion Penguins on Saturday night. This week, the Sharks will face the Predators, Stars and Blues.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – week 5

November 2nd, 2009

With 5 of the not-so-young NHL season concluding, Stayclassy.net presents its weekly Classy Power Rankings. Notable jumps in the rankings come from the strong play of teams like the Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, New York Islanders and yes, even the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 5

30.  Carolina Hurricanes (2-8-3, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 29)
Although the Carolina Hurricanes have more points than the Toronto Maple Leafs, they also own the NHL’s longest losing streak this season. Their current 9-game losing streak is three times longer than any other existing losing streak. The ‘Canes are flatlining badly while the Leafs are looking marginally better. Carolina are being outscored 4-2 in each game (on average) and are 0-5-2 on the road this season. Lastly, Carolina was blown out 6-1 and 5-1 this weekend by the Flyers and Sharks. Not good. And Eric Staal is now injured.

29.  Toronto Maple Leafs (1-7-4, 6 pts – last week’s ranking: 30)
The Toronto Maple Leafs recent west-coast road trip wasn’t amazing, but did see them pick up points in each of the four games (1-0-3). The return of Jonas Gustavsson has helped the Leafs substantially and fans are hoping for a similar impact from Phil Kessel who’s likely to debut Tuesday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Beyond Tampa, the Leafs play the Hurricanes and Red Wings last this week.

28.  Florida Panthers (4-7-1, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 29)
Two straight wins from the Florida Panthers over the Blues and Stars get the ‘Cats moving up in this week’s Classy Rankings. The Panthers have three very important divisional games this week: two against the Capitals and the other against lowly Hurricanes.

27.  Anaheim Ducks (4-6-2, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 25)
The Anaheim Ducks had a bit of a turbulent past week. They lose badly to the Leafs 6-3, then smoke the Canucks 7-2, only to fall 3-2 to the Coyotes the next night. Inconsistent play has plagued the Ducks so far this season, however, the team has put forth better efforts and positive results more recently – something Ducks fans hope to see continue this week against the Penguins, Predators and Coyotes.

26.  Minnesota Wild (5-9-0, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 27)
I find it strange that three of the Minnesota Wild’s five wins are over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers, yet they continue to have trouble against middle-class NHL teams like the Oilers, Ducks and Predators. The Wild will need to turn their inconsistent play around in a hurry before their point deficit becomes too large. They currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference and five points out of a playoff spot. On deck are three teams the Wild can beat if they play well: the Canucks, Stars and Leafs.

25.  St. Louis Blues (5-6-1, 11 pts – last week’s ranking: 18)
It’s been approximately 121 minutes since the St. Louis Blues last scored a goal. That goal came on Wednesday in a 5-2 win over the Hurricanes and since then, the Blues were shutout in games against the Coyotes and Panthers. The Blues team are far too good to boast this sub-.500 record. They’ll need to score against the Flames, Flyers and Thrashers this week if they hope to make any ground in a tight Western Conference playoff race.

24.  Tampa Bay Lightning (4-3-4, 12 pts – last week’s ranking: 21)
The Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steve Stamkos is red hot right now! Although he’s tied for fourth in NHL goals this season, the rest of the Lightning haven’t done too much. Vincent Lecavalier continues to struggle and it took Alex Tanguay 10 games to get his first goal of the season. The Lightning have a big week coming up with games against the Flyers, Leafs, Canadiens and Senators.

23.  Atlanta Thrashers (5-4-1, 11 pts – last week’s ranking: 22)
It’s going to take a lot for the Atlanta Thrashers to rise above the injury to Ilya Kovalchuk, but goaltender Ondrej Pavelec is doing his absolute best including making 51 saves in a big time win over the Senators on Saturday. The Thrashers hope Pavelec can continue his hot play (with his mask on) when they play the Canadiens, Blue Jackets, Islanders and Blues this week.

22.  Boston Bruins (6-6-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 17)
Do the Boston Bruins have a bit of a goalie controversy in the making with Tim Thomas slumping and Tuukka Rask posting a shutout over the Oilers on the weekend? Probably not, but some of the Bruins younger players are really starting to step up – players like Blake Wheeler and Vladamir Sobotka. They’ll need to continue their strong play in games coming up against the Red Wings, Canadiens, Sabres and Penguins.

21.  New York Islanders (4-4-5, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 28)
Don’t look now but the New York Islanders have won three straight games over the Rangers (not bad), Capitals (impressive) and a 5-0 drubbing of the Sabres (very impressive). The Islanders are getting good play from their Kyle Okposo-John Tavares-Matt Moulson line while Dwayne Roloson and Marty Biron put up respectable goaltending numbers. The Oilers, Sabres, Devils and Canadiens are on deck for the suddenly surging Isles.

20.  Detroit Red Wings (5-4-3, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 23)
This Detroit Red Wings team is baffling. There are moments when this team shows signs of dominant play and there are times when the Red Wings look like an AHL team. Look no further than the Oilers game on Thursday that saw the Wings get down 5-1, only to tie the game in a period. Goaltending is an issue, just like last week and the week before. The Wings cannot continue the season with status quo.

19.  Philadelphia Flyers (6-4-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 18)
The Philadelphia Flyers are 5-1 when they score four goals or more. When they score three goals or less, they are 1-4. That’s an issue because Danny Briere and Simon Gagne cannot seem to stay healthy while Jeff Carter is struggling to score this year.  I still think the Flyers are capable of a far better record than what they currently have. They need to have a big week against the Lightning, Sabres and Blues.

18.  Nashville Predators (6-6-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 24)
Three wins in a row for the Nashville Predators against the Wild, Blackhawks and Stars last week put them right back up at .500 hockey. The Preds have won four of their last five games and hope to continue their solid play against the Ducks, Kings and Sharks this week.

17.  Ottawa Senators (6-4-2, 14 pts – last week’s ranking: 16)
After starting the season with a solid 5-2 record, the Ottawa Senators seem to have taken a step back with recent injuries to Anton Volchenkov and Jason Spezza, going 1-3-2 in their last 6 games. The Senators also sent Erik Karlsson to the AHL for further development with Filip Kuba’s return. Flu has hit the team hard, but goaltender Pascal Leclaire has (finally) recovered in time to have a big impact in games against the Lightning and Devils this week.

16.  Montreal Canadiens (7-7-0, 14 pts – last week’s ranking: 19)
The Montreal Canadiens ran into two strong teams on the road this week in the Blackhawks and Penguins, but are 5-0 in their last five home games. I still want to see more from Andrei Kostitsyn and Guillam Latendresse, but Tomas Plekanec has stepped up nicely. Strong play from Jaroslav Halak has given the Canadiens some stable goaltending Carey Price wasn’t giving them. Wonder who gets the start for each of their upcoming games against the Thrashers, Bruins and Lightning.

15.  Vancouver Canucks (8-7-0, 16 pts – last week’s ranking: 15)
Injuries continue to be the story for the Vancouver Canucks. This week, Roberto Luongo went down for an undetermined amount of time. Daniel Sedin is still hurt, too. The Canucks are hoping Andrew Raycroft can continue playing well (feels weird writing that) – who posted an impressive shutout against the Avalanche on Sunday –   against the Rangers, Wild and Stars. It should be noted Ryan Kessler is easily the Canucks early season MVP, too. The Canucks aren’t doing themselves any favors by not signing him long term immediately.

14.  Calgary Flames (7-4-1, 15 pts – last week’s ranking: 5)
The Calgary Flames lost their only two games this past week to the Avalanche and Red Wings and managed to score a total of three goals in the process. They’ll need better efforts and results against the Stars, Blues and Rangers this week. This Flames team has been underwhelming so far this season and will require more from Olli Jokinen and Jarome Iginla (who is tied for 2nd in penalty minutes with 20).

13.  Edmonton Oilers (7-6-1, 15 pts – last week’s ranking: 11)
I really didn’t like the week the Edmonton Oilers had. They lost games to the Bruins and Avalanche – both shutouts and the game they won against the Red Wings, they nearly blew a 5-1 lead. Three of the Oilers last four games have been shutout losses. Almost every goal against the Oilers was shot high glove side which makes me wonder about Nikolai Khabibulan’s health. They Oilers line up against the Islanders and Rangers this week.

12.  Columbus Blue Jackets (7-5-1, 15 pts – last week’s ranking: 13)
The Columbus Blue Jackets had a big win against the Capitals last night to snap a 3-game losing streak. I’m concerned with the number of games that feature the Jackets allowing four or more goals against. This isn’t typical for a Ken Hitchcock team and especially for last year’s rookie of the year, Steve Mason. This is another team I expect to really get going soon. That said, Rick Nash is having an excellent start to the year – he’s fourth in league scoring with 2o points in 13 games. The Jackets play the Sharks, Thrashers and Hurricanes over the next seven days.

11.  Dallas Stars (6-3-5, 17 pts – last week’s ranking: 8 )
I still think the Dallas Stars have an underrated top 6 forward line up. That said, the Stars had an OK  week collecting three of six points in their three games with wins over the Leafs losses to the Panthers and Predators. Unfortunately, the Stars are 2-2-2 at home this season and two of their next three games against the Flames and Canucks are in Dallas.

10.  New Jersey Devils (8-4-0, 16 pts – last week’s ranking: 12)
The New Jersey Devils are a perfect 7-0 on the road this year while only mustering up one win in five games at home. Could be an issue with home games this week against the Capitals and Islanders. Of the 12 games this Devils play this month, six are at home and six are away. This could be a pretty critical time for the Devils to solidify their playoff contention (15 of the 16 teams that were in playoff positions in November last season ended up making the playoffs).

9.  Buffalo Sabres (8-2-1, 17 pts – last week’s ranking: 9)
The Buffalo Sabres are easily having the quietest good start in the NHL. Ryan Miller has been nothing short of amazing, while the team is getting scoring from many different players. And then they got blown out by the Islanders. But prior to that, the Sabres were riding a 4-game win streak; all of which against Eastern Conference teams. The Sabres will look to continue that this week in Eastern Conference battles with the Islanders (let’s hope for a better showing in the rematch from Saturday), Flyers and Bruins.

8.  Chicago Blackhawks (8-4-1, 17 pts – last week’s ranking: 10)
The Chicago Blackhawks still don’t have captain Jonathan Toews back from injury yet, but might have him for either of their games later this week against the Coyotes and Avalanche. Last week, the Hawks went 2-1 beating the Canadiens and Wild (Martin Havlat’s return to Chicago) but lost to the Predators 2-0.

7.  Los Angeles Kings (8-4-2, 18 pts – last week’s ranking: 3)
The Los Angeles Kings dropped their two Western Conference games last week to the Sharks and Canucks, both in shootouts, both by 2-1 scores. The Kings need to get scoring back up when they play the Coyotes, Penguins and Predators this week.

6.  Phoenix Coyotes (9-4-0, 18 pts – last week’s ranking: 14)
The Phoenix Coyotes are on a nice 3-game win streak, beating the likes of the Blue Jackets, Blues and Ducks last week. This week, the ‘Yotes faceoff against the Kings, Avalanche, Blackhawks and Ducks. Ilya Brzgalov continues to shine for the Coyotes with an awesome. 930 save percentage and a league best three shutouts already. Coach Dave Tippett finally has this team playing like they’ve probably been capable of playing in years past. The only question is, can they continue this kind of play all season?

5.  New York Rangers (9-5-1, 19 pts – last week’s ranking: 6)
New York Rangers franchise goaltender Henrik Lundqvist recorded his 150th career NHL victory over the Boston Bruins yesterday in a 1-0 shutout win, snapping a 2-game losing streak. The Rangers are on a tour of Western Canada this week seeing action against the Canucks, Oilers and Flames. They are 3-3-1 on the road this year and three points back of the Conference best Pittsburgh Penguins. Marian Gaborik’s injury appears to be a non-point, too. Rangers fans can rest easily again.

4.  Washington Capitals (8-2-4, 20 pts – last week’s ranking: 7)
All anyone will be talking about with regards to the Washington Capitals is the state of Alex Ovechkin and the injury he appeared to suffer in Sunday’s loss to the Blue Jackets. Coach Bruce Boudreau suggests Ovechkin is day-to-day and will be further evaluated on Tuesday. Last week the Capitals 6-game win streak was broken by the Rangers Islanders in a shootout, only followed up by another shootout loss to Columbus days later. The Capitals have earned 15 out of a possible 18 points in their last nine games. Seven of those games were one goal games, too.

3.  San Jose Sharks (10-4-1, 21 pts – last week’s ranking: 4)
The San Jose Sharks continue to flex their muscles as one of the Western Conferences stronger teams. Patrick Marleau has been playing terrific hockey as of late and currently sits two points back of the NHL scoring lead (held by Alex Ovechkin). The Sharks also have Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley sitting in the top 10 for NHL scoring, too. The Sharks look to extend their 5-game win streak this week against the Blue Jackets, Red Wings and Penguins.

2.  Colorado Avalanche (10-3-2, 22 pts – last week’s ranking: 2)
I don’t even know what to say about the Colorado Avalanche anymore. They are off to a great start, despite losing their last two games and will look to rebound this week in home games against the Coyotes, Blackhawks and Oilers. The Avalanche are a perfect 4-0 at the Pepsi Center this year.

1.  Pittsburgh Penguins (11-3-0, 22 pts – last week’s ranking: 1)
As the Pittsburgh Penguins role on, so do the wins. Injuries to Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin can’t stop the team from strong play. With victories over the Blue Jackets and Canadiens, the Penguins did fall on Saturday to the Minnesota Wild, despite Sidney Crosby’s fight with Marek Zidlicky. (You can see it here). The Penguins play out West this week against the Ducks, Kings and Sharks.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – week 4

October 26th, 2009

With week 4 of the NHL all wrapped up, the updated Classy Rankings are below and include games from Sunday night. The Toronto Maple Leafs are still last and the Avalanche and Penguins are joined by the Kings, Sharks and Capitals in the top 10.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 4

30.  Toronto Maple Leafs (0-7-1, 1 pts – last week’s ranking: 30)
It’s a bit hard for the Toronto Maple Leafs to move up the Classy Rankings when they lose their only game of the week to Vancouver on Saturday. But don’t worry Leafs fans, Ron Wilson says if Luongo wasn’t in nets, you would of won. Trouble is, the next three games for the Leafs feature great goalies like Jonas Hiller, Marty Turco and Ryan Miller. Can’t wait for the next excuse.

29.  Florida Panthers (2-6-1, 5 pts – last week’s ranking: 27)
The Florida Panthers are on a three game losing streak having dropped games to conference rivals in the Sabres, Penguins and Flyers. Saturday’s loss to the Flyers was particularly bad with David Booth leaving the game on a stretcher following a big-time hit from Mike Richards. Radek Dvorak also got hurt in the same game in a knee on knee incident with Darroll Powe. Looking ahead for the Panthers, they face off with the Senators, Stars and Blues this week.

28.  New York Islanders (1-4-4, 6 pts – last week’s ranking: 28)
Another week goes by without the New York Islanders winning a second hockey game. With a flat performance against the Montreal Canadiens and a shootout loss to the Capitals on Saturday, the Islanders need a solid rebound week as they’ll play the Canadiens, Rangers, Capitals and Sabres.

27.  Minnesota Wild (3-7-0, 6 pts – last week’s ranking: 29)
The Minnesota did something only one other NHL team has done this year: beat the Colorado Avalanche (it still sounds weird to say). That was a huge victory for the club who are struggling to find some confidence in their game. The Wild beat the Hurricanes on Saturday after losing to the Blues earlier in the week. Next up for the Wild are the Hawks, Predators and Rangers – their first time playing against Marian Gaborik.

26.  Carolina Hurricanes (2-5-3, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 24)
Losers of six straight games, the Carolina Hurricanes are in a bad tailspin. Nothing has gone particularly well for Paul Maurice and co. If the ‘Canes are looking for any positive notes, each of their three losses this week were one-goal games… which is better than some of the blow-out losses earlier in the season. The Blues and Flyers are on deck this week for the ‘Canes.

25.  Anaheim Ducks (3-5-1, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 18)
News of Justin Pogge being called up got Leaf fans excited, but it was precautionary as a result of J.S. Giguere being day-to-day with an injury. That aside, Ryan Getzlaf is having an expected slow start to the season as he recovers from off season surgery. As noted last week, the Anaheim Ducks are having all kinds of trouble scoring goals, averaging just over two goals in the first nine games of the season. This week the Ducks are in action against the Canucks, Leafs and Coyotes.

24.  Nashville Predators (3-6-1, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 26)
The Nashville Predators have scored 18 goals in 10 games this season while averaging 3.3 goals against per game. Goaltending and defensive play isn’t close to where it should be for a team with Shea Weber, Ryan Sutter and others. Prospect Ryan Ellis recently signed an entry level contract with the Preds. That’s about the only good news Preds fans have right now. They’ll play the Wild, Hawks and Stars this week.

23.  Detroit Red Wings (3-4-2, 8 pts – last week’s ranking: 17)
I can’t remember the last time I saw the Detroit Red Wings with only three wins in their first nine games. Weird. Another weird thing: the Wings have lost two Colorado in two straight Saturday night games. Is this the 90s or something? I think we’re starting to see Detroit’s lack of depth and perhaps the kids (Abdelkader, Leino) aren’t quite ready for top 6 minutes yet. All Canadian week ahead for the Wings as they play the Flames, Canucks and Oilers. None of those games will be easy.

22.  Atlanta Thrashers (4-3-1, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 14)
After getting off to the best start in franchise history, the Atlanta Thrashers then dropped three straight games to the Canadiens (great game though, other than the Kozlov hit on Gomez), Capitals and Sharks. And to make matters worse, Ilya Kovalchuk left Saturday’s game versus the Sharks with a foot injury. The extent of the injury is not yet known. The Thrashers play the Capitals and Senators this week.

21.  Tampa Bay Lightning (3-3-3, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 23)
Starting the year off at .500 isn’t exactly what Rich Tocchet imagined with a decent roster. Vincent Lecavalier finally scored his first goal of the season on Saturday, yet hit the cross bar in the shootout against the Sabres. Better play is need from some of the Tampa Bay Lightning veteran players. Both Marty St. Louis and Steve Stamkos are putting up solid numbers despite this. The Lightning play the Senators and Devils over the next seven days.

Six of the teams ranked between 30-21 are on losing streaks of three games or more. The Leafs (8 games), the Hurricanes (6 games), the Panthers (3 games) are some examples. Also, Six of the bottom ten teams haven’t won a game on the road, either. Ouch.

20.  St. Louis Blues (4-4-1, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 19) The St. Louis Blues have admittedly not played one full-solid game this season. They’ve reportedly gone to great lengths to figure out why – evaluating everything from meetings to practices and training. Meanwhile, TJ Oshie had appendectomy surgery this week following stomach pains. Tough week for the Blues who lost badly to the Penguins and Stars. They’ll see Hurricanes, Coyotes and Panthers this week. They should nail down two wins in these three games to get back on track.

19.  Montreal Canadiens (5-5-0, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 25)
The small three are playing big for the Montreal Canadiens. OK – Corny, but its true. The Habs have won three straight games and despite how hard Colby Armstrong hit Marc-Andre Bergeron, MAB looks great. Speaking of great, Jaroslav Halak looks great too and had an amazing goaltender duel versus the Thrashers this week. The Cammalleri-Gomez-Gionta line looks quick, annoying and spends nearly no time in their own end. Big time game from Cammalleri (his name always makes me think of calimari) on Saturday night. The Habs will play the Islanders, Penguins, Blackhawks and Leafs over the next seven days.

18.  Philadelphia Flyers (5-4-1, 11 pts – last week’s ranking: 20)
The Philadelphia Flyers had a 2-2 week that saw them win big and lose big. I’m still expecting more from this club. For a team that’s supposed to contend for the Stanley Cup, I was disappointed with their effort against the Sharks, although I realize it was a exhausting week for the club. The Flyers have the Capitals and Hurricanes on deck this week.

17.  Boston Bruins (5-4-1, 11 pts – last week’s ranking: 22)
The Boston Bruins will get a chance to see how NHL ready their young prospects are with injuries to Marc Savard, Milan Lucic, Dennis Wideman and others. After grabbing five of six points this week, the Bruins look to continue that trend against the Devils and Oilers this week. Are the Bruins finally getting their act together?

16.  Ottawa Senators (5-2-2, 12 pts – last week’s ranking: 8 )
Coach Cory Clouston cannot be happy with two overtime losses in a row for the Ottawa Senators. Especially one against the Bruins on Saturday night, coughing up two goal lead with  90 seconds left. Thursday’s back-and-forth pond hockey game with the Predators left much to be desired defensively. The Senators will need to get their game back to normal for upcoming tilts with the Panthers, Lightning and Thrashers – they should be able to win two of these games at least.

15.  Vancouver Canucks (6-5-0, 12 pts – last week’s ranking: 21)
Despite injuries to Daniel Sedin, Sami Salo, Pavol Demitra and others, the Vancouver Canucks have put together three straight wins including one particularly impressive comeback against the Blackhawks in Chicago. Kessler continues to lead the way for the club while Luongo posted an overdue shutout performance last night against the Oilers. Mason Raymond and Michael Grabner look great together, too. Definitely one of the leagues fastest skating lines.

14.  Phoenix Coyotes (6-3-0, 12 pts – last week’s ranking: 7)
The Phoenix Coyotes slip a bit this week as a result of losing ground on points in the Western Conference – they only had two games this week beating Detroit and losing to the LA Kings. A busy four games this week for the Desert Dogs this week facing off against the Rangers, Blue Jackets, Blues and Ducks.

13.  Columbus Blue Jackets (6-4-0, 12 pts – last week’s ranking: 4)
An ugly loss in Los Angeles last night, Ken Hitchcock’s Columbus Blue Jackets have allowed three or more goals against in four straight games. They’ve also lost all three of those games. Not good enough from Steve Mason or a Hitchcock system. On the upside, goal scoring is being produced solidly from a good top 6 group. The Jackets will look to rebound this week against the Coyotes and Penguins.

12.  New Jersey Devils (6-3-0, 12 pts – last week’s ranking: 15)
The New Jersey Devils have quietly won three games in a row against worthy opponents in the Penguins, Rangers and Hurricanes. Not bad. Zach Parise looks every bit as good as he did last season and will need to be against the Sabres, Bruins and Lightning this week.

11.  Edmonton Oilers (6-4-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 11)
Well, Dustin Penner is back and better than ever for the Edmonton Oilers. But while the Edmonton Oilers put up three straight wins, they’ve quickly dropped two weekend tilts with the Flames and Canucks. The Oilers, Sam Gagner and Penner need to regroup (and get healthy!) for a big upcoming week against the Red Wings, Avalanche and Bruins.

10.  Chicago Blackhawks (6-3-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 6)
I’m still not totally impressed with the Chicago Blackhawks, although I keep forgetting Marian Hossa is due back soon. He can’t get in the line up quick enough either as injuries to Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook have quickly crept in for the Hawks. Goaltending will forever be an issue with their current roster and it absolutely needs to be addressed, despite a shutout against the Predators on Saturday. Chicago’s upcoming week see’s them play the Wild, Predators and Canadiens.

9.  Buffalo Sabres (6-1-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 10)
Lindy Ruff’s Buffalo Sabres are still rock solid defensively, allowing an average of only two goals against per game. The Big question surround the Sabres is whether or not Tyler Myers stays in the NHL. The answer seems pretty obvious to me… keep him. The Sabres beat the Panthers and Lightning this week and look to continue winning against the Devils, Leafs and Islanders.

8.  Dallas Stars (5-2-4, 14 pts – last week’s ranking: 12)
Quietly creeping up the Western Conference, Marc Crawford’s Dallas Stars are still undefeated on the road having recently beaten the Ducks and Blues while losing in over time to the Kings. The Stars look to continue their winning streak this week against the Leafs, Panthers and Predators. Oh, and Brad Richards is playing great hockey for the Stars right now!

7.  Washington Capitals (6-2-2, 14 pts – last week’s ranking: 9)
Winners of 4 straight, the Washington Capitals had a great week last week beating the Islanders and Thrashers. Things are firing pretty well for the Caps (even goaltending has been OK) and they look to continue their strong play against the Flyers, Thrashers and Islanders this week.

6.  New York Rangers (7-3-1, 15 pts – last week’s ranking: 1)
Bad week for the New York Rangers last week, losing three straight to the Canadiens, Devils and Sharks. The Rangers have come back to earth, but still hold a strong record with a fairly easy upcoming week. They will be in tough against the Coyotes but should come out with wins against the Islanders and Wild.

5.  Calgary Flames (7-2-1, 15 pts – last week’s ranking: 5)
After a bad week two weeks ago, the Calgary Flames turned things around last week posting three straight wins over the Canucks, Blue Jackets and Oilers. This week, the Flames play the Avalanche and Red Wings. And Jarome Iginla still looks a little off, although he’s now scoring.

4.  San Jose Sharks (8-4-1, 17 pts – last week’s ranking: 13)
As expected, Dany Heatley looks great playing with Joe Thornton and the San Jose Sharks. They’ve won three of their last four games and scoring is coming easy for the Sharks – who boast one of the deepest top 6 forwards in the league. On the plate for the Sharks this week are the Kings and Avalanche.

3.  Los Angeles Kings (8-4-0, 16 pts – last week’s ranking: 16)
An absolutely solid week for the Los Angeles Kings as they’ve won four straight games against good teams (Stars, Coyotes, Blue Jackets). The benching of Alexander Frolov apparently worked has he’s put up great numbers since. Anze Kopitar is breaking out beyond anyone’s wildest dreams and now leads the NHL in goals and points!

2.  Colorado Avalanche (8-1-2, 18 pts – last week’s ranking: 3)
It’s hard to argue why the Colorado Avalanche don’t deserve the number one spot this week on the Classy Rankings. The only reason is because the Penguins have more wins. Call it a tie breaker. Craig Anderson continues to play amazingly for the Avs, while Paul Statsny played great hockey last week. No one saw this kind of start for the Avs. The Avs will have a though week against the Oilers, Flames and Sharks this week.

1.  Pittsburgh Penguins (9-2-0, 18 pts – last week’s ranking: 2)
The Pittsburgh Penguins edge the Avalanche for the number one ranking purely based on a win tie breaker. I was particularly impressed with Sidney’s Crosby’s game on Friday night, scoring a powerplay goal, short-handed goal (his first ever, by the way) and shootout goal against the Panthers. Despite this, Neither Crosby or Evgeni Malkin are in the NHL’s top 10 for points (Malkin is 11th…). The Penguins will look to keep rolling this week against the Canadiens, Blues Jackets and Wild.

Stay classy, NHL rankings.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 3

October 19th, 2009

And so, week 3 of the NHL has concluded with no games being played on Sunday after a busy Saturday night. Updated rankings are below. With the play of the Toronto Maple Leafs, I’m starting to think about changing the Power Rankings to include only 29 teams and leaving the Leafs out of it altogether …

There was some big movement in this week’s top 10 with dominant wins from the New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche and Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as a slide from the Calgary Flames.

NHL Classy Power Rankings – Week 3

30.  Toronto Maple Leafs (0-6-1, 1 pts – last week’s ranking: 30)
The Toronto Maple Leafs are winless in 7 games this year and have one point to show for it. Simply put, they are the NHL’s worst team and take the cake for the most under achieving team in the league. Since Dodgeball didn’t work at practice last week, how about trying some board games this week?

29.  Minnesota Wild (1-6-0, 2 pts – last week’s ranking: 29)
I’m starting to wonder if GM Chuck Fletcher has a plan here. The Minnesota Wild are off to their worst start in years and scoring goals is a big problem.  The Wild rank among the league’s worst in goals scored and have lost their last 5 games on a disasterous road trip.

28.  New York Islanders (0-3-3, 3 pts – last week’s ranking: 27)
The New York Islanders are the only other NHL team to be winless, other than Toronto. Despite being winless, they actually have more points than the Wild and Leafs do. Rookie John Tavares is always finding himself in the right places and is tied for the team lead in points (7 points) with… bet you can’t guess it … Matt Moulson. Seriously, how many of you actually knew that?

27.  Florida Panthers (2-4-0, 4 pts – last week’s ranking: 28)
With 6 more games remaining in October, the Florida Panthers need to win at least 4 of them to have any chance of making ground on division rivals. The only problem is, those games are against the Sabres, Penguins, Flyers, Senators, Stars and Blues. Frankly, I don’t think Florida is better than any of those teams – not the way they are currently playing at least.

26.  Nashville Predators (2-4-1, 5 pts – last week’s ranking: 24)
Losers of 5 straight, the Nashville Predators are in a big time tailspin. Is this the year Barry Trotz doesn’t deliver a solid season with a sub-par roster?  The Preds went 0-4 this week getting beaten badly by Dallas and Edmonton while losing narrowly to Chicago and Washington. Nashville is on a 5 game road trip with games still to play in Boston, Ottawa, Chicago and Minnesota.

25.  Montreal Canadiens (2-5-0, 4 pts – last week’s ranking: 26)
I don’t know how long Jacques Martin and the Montreal Canadiens can continue to pull the ‘Markov card’ for every loss they suffer. Reports indicate the Habs have called up Marc Andre Bergeron who may or may not be ready for NHL play. Carey Price still looks shakey and the Canadiens recent Western Canadian road trip was a disaster. Montreal needs a big week to get themselves back into playoff contention and its starts with games against the Islanders (should win), Thrashers (will be tough) and Rangers (will be very tough).

24.  Carolina Hurricanes (2-4-1, 5 pts – last week’s ranking: 21)
The Carolina Hurricanes have had a strange season so far seeing them get bounced 7-1 one game only for them to show up the following night and win by the same score. Scoring has been a problem for the Hurricanes as no player has more than 3 goals in the 7 games played. The team has generated a total of 15 goals all season. You won’t win many games in the NHL if you average just over 2 goals per game. Even if Cam Ward plays as well as he can.

23.  Tampa Bay Lightning (2-3-2, 6 pts – last week’s ranking: 22)
I really expected better things from the Tampa Bay Lightning this year, but seeing the Senators pick apart the Lightning last week makes me wonder how the Lightning even have 6 points. Although St. Louis and Stamkos have led the way offensively, Victor Hedman has struggled at times (I know, I did predict he’d win the Rookie of the Year honors…) and Mike Smith has not been a solid goaltending presence. The performances of Hedman and Smith pale in comparison to Vinny Lecavalier who’s been invisible so far this season.

22.  Boston Bruins (3-4-0, 6 pts – last week’s ranking: 20)
Some bad news out of Boston this weekend – the Boston Bruin’s Milan Lucic broke his finger and has been placed on long term IR. Meanwhile, the Bruins are off to a slow start and rumors of Marc Savard’s future are already beginning to swirl (and will continue to get worse without a contract extension in place). The Bruins have a big upcoming week with games against the Predators, Flyers and Senators. ** TRADE UPDATE ** Late Sunday night, the Bruins traded Chuck Kobasew to the Minnesota Wild for Craig Wellar and a 2011 2nd round draft pick.

21.  Vancouver Canucks (3-4-0, 6 pts – last week’s ranking: 16)
Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks still aren’t looking as sharp as expected 7 games into the NHL season, but had a much better 60-minute effort on Saturday against the Wild. Concerns about Luongo being pulled in multiple games are a big deal for the Canucks, but if its any consolation, Ryan Keslser and Alex Burrows appear to be picking up exactly where they left off last season. And on that note, Sami Salo is hurt again. This is Salo’s 18th career NHL injury. The ‘Nucks have two big games against the Oilers and Blackhawks this week before an easy pick-up game with the Leafs on Saturday. Going 3 for 3 would be a great week for the Canucks.

20.  Philadelphia Flyers (3-2-1, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 5)
For a team that’s considered a Stanley Cup contender by many, the Philadelphia Flyers certainly aren’t showing it. They’ve lost 3 games in a row after starting the season with a Ray Emery shutout and going 3-1-1. A quirky schedule to start the year doesn’t help the Flyers, who have just three games in October between the 10th and 22nd. The Flyers will end the month with 5 games in 9 nights playing the Sharks and Capitals among others.

19.  St. Louis Blues (3-2-1, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 23)
The St. Louis Blues have a busy week ahead of them, playing the Penguins, Wild and Stars. At times, the Blues have lost focus this season and need to continue to play the aggressive  ’Andy Murray’ style. Keith Tkachuk and Andy McDonald are having strong seasons so far while Erik Johnston is looking for a breakout season following a golf injury last year. T.J. Oshie is off to a slow start but I expect him to get going as the season progresses.

18.  Anaheim Ducks (3-3-1, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 14)
The Anaheim Ducks have scored just 16 goals in 7 NHL games this season. That’s not good enough from a roster that includes Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Temmu Selanne and Bobby Ryan. Infact, other than Perry and Selanne, only 6 players have scored for the Ducks… and that includes Getzlaf’s big-fat zero. The Ducks have big games against the Stars and Blue Jackets this week before hosting former GM Brian Burke and his league worst Leafs the following week.

17.  Detroit Red Wings (3-3-1, 7 pts – last week’s ranking: 17)
Evidently not the power house club they once were, the Detroit Red Wings are winless on the road this year, despite a solid home record and an impressive win over the Los Angeles Kings this week. Nicklas Lidstrom recorded his 1,000th career point in the NHL this week. Congrats to the greatest NHL defenseman, ever.

16.  Los Angeles Kings (4-4-0, 8 pts – last week’s ranking: 7)
A rough week for the Los Angeles Kings losing 3 of 4 games against the Rangers, Red Wings and Blue Jackets.  The young Kings need to get back to their winning ways with their next three games against divisional opponents (Stars and Coyotes). A .500 record would certainly be considered a disappointing season for this club…

15.  New Jersey Devils (4-3-0, 8 pts – last week’s ranking: 19)
The New Jersey Devils are hanging in there as best as they can with Zach Parise and Travis Zajac leading the way (both with 7 points in 7 games). Surprisingly, late free agent pickup Rob Niedermayer has chipped in 5 points in 7 games for the Devils. The problem is, it ends there. The Devils have only scored a total of 18 goals (these 3 have 9 of those goals) and desperately need Patrik Elias back in their line up. Elias is targeting an early November return.

14.  Atlanta Thrashers (4-1-1, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 25)
It’s amazing what 2 wins in a week will get you in the Stayclassy.net weekly rankings. Especially when you’re the Atlanta Thrashers and you beat the Sabres and Devils after a bad loss to the Senators last weekend. Not all is perfect for the Thrashers, however, CBC’s Saturday night Hotstove reported concerns star winger Ilya Kovalchuk could be KHL bound following this season.

13.  San Jose Sharks (4-3-1, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 4)
The San Jose Sharks are doing OK so far this season, but expectations are obviously high. I’m concerned with their goaltending as they’ve allowed 23 goals against in only 8 games. That’s simply not good enough. As part of your weekly Shark-tacular drama: the Sharks have reportedly taken Dany Heatley off their top powerplay unit in favor of Patrick Marleau, a player more familiar with the Sharks system. Take whatever you want from that…

12.  Dallas Stars (3-1-3, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 15)
Joe Nieuwendyk has done a nice job retooling the Dallas Stars, helping them to victories over the Blackhawks and Predators last week. The Stars appear to have their top scorers playing well with Brad Richards, Brenden Morrow and Mike Ribeiro leading the team in points. Jamie Benn, Loui Eriksson and James Neal help round out a strong and underrated top 6 group of forwards.

11.  Edmonton Oilers (4-2-1, 9 pts – last week’s ranking: 12)
The Edmonton Oilers are getting great play from Dustin Penner, Mike Comrie Nikolai Khabibulan and Dennis Grebeshkov, among others. Coach Pat Quinn has helped a lot of the Oilers younger players play with a greater edge and faster tempo game. The Oilers won 2 of 3 games this week against the Wild and Predators and look to continue their winning ways this week when they face the Canucks, Blue Jackets and Flames.

10.  Buffalo Sabres (4-1-1, 9 pts – last week’s rating: 9)
I don’t think I’ve seen Ryan Miller play better for the Buffalo Sabres, allowing only 12 goals against in their 6 games (second lowest in the NHL). Tyler Myers continues his strong play and notched his first career goal this week, while Derek Roy, Clarke MacArthur and Tim Connolly lead the way offensively for Buffalo. The Sabres got some good news this week when Thomas Vanek’s injury was less serious than originally thought. Vanek could be back as early as this week.

9.  Washington Capitals ( 4-2-2, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 13)
Alexander Ovechkin has started this year on fire scoring 9 goals in the caps first 8 games. Goaltending questions aside, this is a team poised for playoff success. There’s no doubt the Capitals will make the playoffs with a likely seed of 4 or better. The Capitals have shown a lack of consistent play early on in this season. One has to wonder what kind of physical shape the Capitals stars will be by the end of the regular season considering up to 7 players could play for their respective countries at the Vancouver Olympics.

8.  Ottawa Senators (5-2-0, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 6)
A quiet and solid start for the Ottawa Senators this year is exactly what the doctor ordered. The Senators have picked up where they left off under Cory Clouston’s coaching with Milan Michalek having a breakthrough effort against the Lightning last week. Alex Kovalev had a solid and emotional return to Montreal on Saturday and Jason Spezza is playing some of the best 2-way hockey of his young career. Pascal Leclaire has been solid for Ottawa in all his starts making key saves at the right times – again, exactly what the Senators ordered.

7.  Phoenix Coyotes (5-2-0, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 18)
The Phoenix Coyotes had a great turnaround this past week, turning in 3 straight wins against the Sharks, Blues and Bruins. The Coyotes now sit 3rd in the Western Conference and have fairly balanced scoring from all lines, despite the lack of production from young stars Mikkel Boedker and Peter Muller. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov is the hottest goaltender in the NHL with 2 shutouts and only 7 goals against in 6 games!

6.  Chicago Blackhawks (5-2-1, 11 pts – last week’s ranking: 11)
Two big reasons for the Blackhawks solid start are Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp. Another huge factor to the Hawks winning record lies with the offensive defensemen in Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith, Cam Barker and Brian Campbell. All 4 of these Hawks are in the top ten in team point scorers and all but Keith have game winning goals this season (3/5 Blackhawk game winning goals came from defensemen – impressive). Despite that, there are still plenty of question marks for the Chicago goaltenders. Time will tell what happens there, but the Hawks cannot win every game like that 6-5 comeback victory over the Flames last week.

5.  Calgary Flames (5-2-1, 11 pts – last week’s ranking: 1)
The Calgary Flames slip a bit this week largely due to their offensive struggles of Olli Jokinen and Jarome Iginla as well as their 6-5 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks after leading the game 5-0 in the 2nd period. Former Ottawa Senator Brian McGratton helped the Flames to a 5-3 victory over the Canucks on Friday by registering his first ever Gordie Howe hattrick, on the heels of two losses earlier in the week.

4.  Columbus Blue Jackets (5-1-0, 10 pts – last week’s ranking: 8 )
Ken Hitchcock has the Columbus Blue Jackets playing great hockey! Steve Mason has been every bit as good this year as last season. The Jackets have only allowed 3 or more goals against in just 2 games this year. Rick Nash leads the team with 10 points in 6 games while Mason’s 2.35 GAA ranks among the top NHL goaltenders.

3.  Colorado Avalanche (6-1-1, 13 pts – last week’s ranking: 10)
What can anyone say about the Colorado Avalanche? They are the real deal. Goaltender Craig Anderson is proving to be one of the summer’s best UFA signings while Wojtek Wolski and Milan Hejduk lead the way offensively for the Avalanche. The Avs had an impressive week that saw them defeat the Bruins, Leafs, Canadiens and Red Wings. Lastly, rookie Matt Duchene scored his first career NHL goal versus Detroit on Saturday night.

2.  Pittsburgh Penguins (7-1-0, 14 pts – last week’s ranking: 2)
Many wondered about the possibility of the Pittsburgh Penguins suffering the ill-fated Stanley Cup hangover. Although the season’s young, I think we can put that worry to rest. The Pens are riding a 5 game winning streak and are the only team to have beaten the Rangers so far this year. Who figured the Atlantic division would hold the NHL’s top two teams?

1.  New York Rangers (7-1-0, 14 pts – last week’s ranking: 3)
John Tortorella and the New York Rangers are the toast of the NHL, riding an impressive 7 game winning streak. Goaltender Hendrik Lundqvist looks as good as he ever has (despite 3 crease-crashing games last week alone) while the summer’s most controversial UFA signing – Marian Gaborik – has been nothing short of amazing. Gaborik has scored 12 points in 8 games for the Rangers with many of those points coming in clutch 3rd period moments. Rookies Matt Gilroy and Michael Del Zotto are playing light’s out hockey for the Rangers while Wade Redden has been noticeably better, too. Kudos to Torts for that alone.

Stay classy, NHL rankings.
