Whammy of the Week

January 30th, 2010

Afternoon sportsfans and happy Hockey Day in Canada!

The Whammy feature here on Stayclassy.net that you have all come to love is undergoing a bit of a change. There now be a Classy Whammy and Non-Classy Whammy each week for you all to compare, contrast, argue over, debate, rejoice and other fancy words Champ is not yet aware of. Enjoy!

This week’s Classy Whammy comes to us from Brian Elliott and the suddenly surging Ottawa Senators against the Chicago Blackhawks. Elliot scrambled to get back into the net and does his best Patrick Roy immitation to rob Marian Hossa of a sure goal. Great stuff.

This week’s Non-Classy Whammy comes courtesy of Alex Auld versus the Vancouver Canucks. Mr. Auld could clearly use a minor novice stick handling clinic because he just looked terrible out there. The Canucks ended up winning this game 4-2.

Until next week,

The Senators toying with everybody all this time?

January 26th, 2010

Oh how quickly things can change in today’s NHL!

Afternoon sportsfans, Champ here feeling the winds of change (insert mandatory Scorpions plug here) in the Nation’s capital with the Ottawa Senators suddenly rolling over opponents like a fat kid at the all you can eat buffet (chubby & blimpy kids association please send your hate mail to the following email address mantooth@stayclassy.net).

Daniel Alfredsson - Ottawa Senators

Daniel Alfredsson has a lot to do with the Senators recent success. Classy.

The Senators, winners of 6 straight, are looking like the Harlem Globetrotters of the NHL right now. With Daniel Alfredsson, Milan Michalek, and Jason Spezza now all back in the fold, they really look to be pushing for a top 4 playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Goaltending, which was horrendous for about a 10 game stretch (almost Red-Light Rocicot-ish), is suddenly quite solid and providing the Sens with a chance of winning every night. Even the powerplay is putting pucks in the net – something Senators fans haven’t seen all season long.

The are even reports that Bryan Murray will be an active buyer at the March 3rd NHL trade deadline. Murry has made no bones about wanting to add additional scoring depth to this seemingly potent lineup. It’s believed he’s looking for a top 6 forward (Carolina’s Ray Whitney or Edmonton’s Andrew Cogliano come to mind) without changing the current roster.

It should make for an interesting conclusion to this hockey season after the Olympics. Either the Senators will keep plowing through teams or will suffer another bi-polar episode and go on a losing streak of epic proportions. It will surely keep fans glued to their televisions to see how this season plays out.

Until next time,

Stay classy, Ottawa Senators Fans.

The Ottawa Senators new anthem?

January 14th, 2010

“Ya I’m free… Free falling”
The new theme song of the Ottawa Senators 2009-2010 Season

Morning Sportsfans, it appears Tom Petty hit the nail right on the head with his popular song. The Ottawa Senators seem to be spiraling out of control with no end in sight. The injury bug has bitten the team like a black fly in Muskoka at the end of June (if you’ve ever been there you’ll understand the reference).

As of writing this, Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Filip Kuba, Milan Michalek, and Jesse Winchester are all out with various injuries. That’s a ton of money sitting on the sidelines (approximately $248,875 per game, using the cap hits from NHLNumbers.com).

To further compound the Senators problems, goaltending has been horrendous as of late (that’s probably why goaltending coach Eli Wilson was fired yesterday). Taking it a step further, it was reported this morning that Pascal Leclaire is now injured (again). The Senators are in New York tonight to face the Rangers. It’s expected Mike Brodeur (who’s 1-0 in his NHL career) will get the start in goal for Ottawa.

Oh and let’s not forget that the team also can’t seem to buy a power play goal… or any goals for that matter. The Senators have only scored five goals in their last five games. The team currently sits tied for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and every team with the exception of the Edmonton Oilers appears to be playing better than the Senators right now.

As a fan it’s difficult to watch, and numerous fans will likely start jumping off the band wagon… if they haven’t already. But those fans faithful to the Church of Alfie will see the team get through this slump once key players return from their respective injuries. Let’s just hope the Senators can regain some chemistry and make a push for the playoffs. One can only hope!

And besides… at least we still have our first round draft pick!

Stay classy, Ottawa Senators.

Champ’s Whammy of the Week

January 10th, 2010

Good day sports fans, Champ is back from his hiatus! Hope everybody had a great holiday, but let’s get right down to business. There are numerous Whammy’s to go over.

First, a sick sick goal by Marian Hossa against Tampa. This goal was bananas and one can’t believe the skill it takes to actually pull this one off. It’s simply crazy!

Next, another Blackhawk with an amazing goal. Kris Versteeg double dangles this one into the back of the net. He left the defenders searching for their jocks.

And last but not least, we have Johnny Boychuck absolutely destroying Matt Stajan and sending him up into the cheap seats. Massive hit!

Until next week,

The roster is set… all systems go for Canada’s World Juniors!

December 17th, 2009

Afternoon sports fans, Champ Kind writing in this baulmy -29 weather… who says Arizona isn’t looking attractive this time of year?

Team Canada released their final roster for the upcoming World Junior Championships which starts on Boxing Day as Canada goes for an unprecendented 6th consecutive gold medal. It’s safe to say that Canada will be the early favourites to repeat but will surely have some stiff competition this time around.

It’s somewhat surprising that Tyler Seguin – the potential number 1 overall pick of next summer’s draft – did not make the squad. One would think that a top prospect like Seguin would be a lock in making the team but it goes to show that it doesn’t matter what you’ve done for your team during the season, you have to demonstrate the hunger and desire required to make Team Canada. It also speaks to the depth Canada has in it’s junior players – a problem very similar to Canada’s Olympic team.

Numerous others have rested on their laurels when going to tryouts and have found themselves watching the tournament from the comfort of their homes wondering what it would be like to have made the team. Canada is blessed with tremendous hockey talent and the fortunate few who have the honour of wearing the maple leaf work diligently to do so.

Ottawa 67 defenceman Tyler Cuma was one of the final cuts after having first been left off the original invite list, then invited when there was an injury, and subsequently cut on Wednesday. Tough ride for the young defenceman, but he will surely continue to work hard with the 67′s and go on to have a great pro career with the Minnesota Wild. As everyone always says, plenty of NHL stars have been cut from Team Canada’s World Junior team, only to have enjoyed terrific NHL careers (Dan Cleary and Matt Duchene to name a few).

The final roster can be found here. The excitement all starts boxing day on TSN – 3:30pm EST.

Stay classy, Team Canada.

Whammy of the Week

December 12th, 2009

Morning sports fans, Champ here with his weekly addition of the WHAMMY of the Week. This week we don’t have a big hit or a good fight as the Whammy… but it’s more of a Whammy in the pants. During the December 6th Anaheim Ducks-Ottawa Senators game, Ryan Getzlaf fires a shot off the glass which rebounds off a stanchion and heads straight into the net.

WHAMMY… Brian Elliot would definitely like to have that one back…

Until next week.

Champ’s Whammy of the Week!

December 4th, 2009

Afternoon sports fans, this week’s WHAMMY is an early candidate for WHAMMY of the Year. Colorado Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey nails Tampa Bay Lightning sniper Steven Stamkos and sends him flying into the bench. Great hit, enjoy!

Team Canada prepares to go for gold in Regina & Saskatoon

December 3rd, 2009

Afternoon sports fans, Champ here reporting on the Team Canada selection camp invitees announced yesterday. For the young men on the list it is the ultimate compliment for any Canadian junior player. A day many of those young men dream of. For the guys left off the camp invite list, it can be heart breaking. The one thing they must keep in perspective is that many successful NHL players never had the opportunity to play in the World Junior tournament and went on the have good NHL careers (ask Dan Cleary). The key for them is to keep working hard and push on to make it to the pros.

That being said there were some surprise omissions from the invite list. Ottawa 67′s Tyler Cuma, who had the devastating knee injury during last year’s camp, and Tyler Toffoli were notable omissions from the invite list as was 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins 1st round draft pick Simon Despres from the QMJHL.

The 36 players invited to this year’s camp includes many returning players from the 2009 Gold medal winning team including Ottawa Senators draft pick Jared Cowen, Colten Teubert (Los Angeles Kings), Ryan Ellis (Nashville Predators), Alex Pietrangelo (St. Louis Blues) and Jordan Eberle (Edmonton Oilers) among others.

Perhaps the most talked about selection is that of Cody Hodgson (Vancouver Canucks). Cody was arguably the best player in last years World Junior tournament but has yet to play a game this season due to injury. Several critics wonder how someone like Cody could be invited to camp when a player like Tyler Cuma is not. Interesting to say the least.

All that being said, Canada definitely looks to have another impressive team in this year’s tournament and the quest for 6 will begin Boxing Day against Latvia.

Stay classy, Team Canada. Here’s hoping a 6th gold medal is coming our way!

Champ’s Whammy of the Week!

November 27th, 2009

This week’s WHAMMY is one from the Battle of Alberta on October 24th. Brian McGrattan versus Steve MacIntyre… Champ hasn’t seen that many body shots thrown in a fight in a long time.  Lots of bombs landed in this tilt.
